Is hormone replacement therapy safe? The answer has changed quite a bit over the last 20+ years.
For years, many women were given a simple message: HRT is risky, so avoid it if you can.
Today, we understand that hormone therapy is not one drug with one universal risk profile.
Age, timing, health history, the type of estrogen, whether progesterone is needed, and even how estrogen is delivered can all affect the benefit-risk conversation.
And for many healthy women who begin hormone therapy before age 60 or within about 10 years of menopause, the overall benefit-risk profile can be favorable.
In Part 5 of our Menopause & Women’s Health series, Erin looks at:
• recent FDA changes to menopause hormone therapy warnings
• what the Women’s Health Initiative actually studied
• CEE vs. modern estradiol
• what “bioidentical” really means
• breast-cancer and blood-clot risk
• why patches and pills are not necessarily the same
• the benefits of HRT for symptoms, quality of life, and bone health
