Today, we recognize Indigenous Peoples Day to honor the culture, history, and resilience of the Indigenous Peoples in the US.

Rochester, NY, sits on the ancestral territory of Onöndowaga (Seneca), and we are privileged to live, work, and play here. As we continue with our day, let us be mindful of the stolen land we are on, uplift Indigenous voices, and express gratitude for the many ways they have and continue to make an impact.

Our development coordinator, Yukali, brought in a purple dahlia from her garden!

Did you know that purple dahlias symbolize dignity? A great representation of the care we provide to our patients- one rooted in compassion and dignity.

Today is National Depression Screening Day, raising awareness about depressive disorders and promoting early detection of depression symptoms. At SJNC, our staff and volunteer providers routinely screen for potential depressive disorder symptoms using quick assessments like the PHQ-9.

Screening tools like the PHQ-9 help identify when a counseling staff member needs to intervene, perform a risk assessment, and schedule an appointment to ensure our patients receive the care they need to prosper.

If you or someone you know would like to speak to a counselor for support, please call us at 585.325.5260.

Brian Westlake, PT, DPT, Cert MDT, is our volunteer physical therapist and started in August 2026. He first found out about us through our executive director, Jen Sahrle, at Common Ground Health's Speak Life! Health Equity Conference and attended one of our Table Talk and Tastings shortly after.

Brian cares deeply about making physical therapy accessible to everyone, since the ability to move and be active is central to living a healthy life. He does this by caring for our patients and helping folks understand how they can improve their physical health with simple strategies they can use in everyday life.

"As physical therapists, we are trained to understand human movement to help people remain as active as possible throughout their lives, regardless of their condition... and October being Physical Therapy Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to express the point of 'exercise is medicine.'"

We are so grateful to Brian for donating his time and expertise to SJNC, further closing the gap toward health care for all.
