🐾 What options exist in veterinary medicine?

Did you know medications for pets can come in more forms than just a pill?

Depending on the medication and your veterinarian’s prescription, veterinary compounding may offer options such as:

💊 Capsules
💧 Oral liquids
🐾 Flavored medications
🧴 Topical preparations
👂 Ear preparations

The best option depends on the medication, the pet, and what the veterinarian determines is appropriate. Because sometimes the hardest part isn't getting the prescription it's getting your pet to actually take it. 🐶🐱

Fun Fact Friday 💊

Did you know that compounding used to be a huge part of everyday pharmacy?

Back in the 1930s and 1940s, roughly 60–75% of prescriptions required compounding by the pharmacist.

Before mass-produced medications became the norm, pharmacists routinely prepared medications in the pharmacy creating specific strengths, dosage forms, and combinations for individual prescriptions.

As pharmaceutical manufacturing grew in the 1950s and 1960s, the need for traditional pharmacy compounding declined dramatically.

Today, compounding is a much smaller part of pharmacy but the idea behind it hasn't changed:

Sometimes, the standard medication isn't quite the right fit.

That's where customized medication can still have a place in patient care. 💊

Should you drink a glass of water after taking every medication? 💧💊

Not necessarily!

It can be tempting to think that taking a sip of water after every medication is always the right thing to do. But different medications and dosage forms can have different instructions.

For example, a pill that you swallow may have different directions than a liquid, dissolvable tablet, troche, or medication meant to stay in your mouth.

With some medications, drinking water immediately afterward may actually change how the medication is intended to be used.

So don’t assume that “more water” is always better. Follow the instructions on your prescription and ask your pharmacist if you’re unsure whether you should eat, drink, rinse, or wait after taking your medication.

A few extra seconds to check the instructions can make a difference. 💧

Giving your pet medication doesn’t always go as smoothly as we’d like. 🐾💊

Maybe your dog spits out every pill, your cat refuses anything mixed into food, or you have a pet who makes medication time a daily battle. 😅

Depending on the medication and your veterinarian’s prescription, compounding may offer options that can make administration easier such as different dosage forms or flavoring.

Sometimes a small change in how a medication is prepared can make a big difference in getting it into your pet consistently.

And because every pet (and every pet owner!) is different, your veterinarian can help determine what option is appropriate for your pet.

Medication time doesn’t have to be the hardest part of the day. 🐶🐱

“Take with food.”

We’ve all seen it on a medication label but what does that actually mean? 🍽️💊

Does it mean you need a full meal? A snack? Does coffee count?

Usually, the instruction means you should take the medication with or shortly after eating, but the exact timing can depend on the medication.

For some medications, food can help reduce stomach irritation. For others, food can affect how your body absorbs the medication.

So if your prescription says “take with food,” don’t assume it means the same thing for every medication. Some foods may negatively impact the drug.

Always act your Pharmacist or Physician about what foods you should avoid while starting a new prescription.

Let’s Clear This Up:

"If a pill is hard to swallow, I can just crush it."

❌ Not always.

Some medications can be crushed, but others should not be. Crushing certain tablets can change how the medication is released or absorbed, potentially affecting how the medication works.

If swallowing a medication is difficult, don’t assume crushing it is okay. Ask your pharmacist first. There may be another way to take the medication, such as a different dosage form or formulation.

Before you crush it, check with your pharmacist. 💊

Ever wonder why some medications say “Shake Well Before Use”? 🧴

It’s not just a suggestion!

Some liquid medications contain ingredients that can settle or separate over time. Shaking helps redistribute those ingredients so the medication is more evenly mixed before each dose.

That matters because you want each dose to contain the medication in the intended concentration.

So when your bottle says “shake well,” give it a good shake before measuring out your dose and follow any specific instructions from your pharmacist or prescriber.

A few extra seconds can help make sure you’re getting the medication as intended.

Your health isn’t something you should only think about when something feels wrong.

Preventative care is about staying ahead of your health not waiting for a problem to become a bigger one.

Regular checkups, recommended screenings, healthy habits, and taking medications as directed can all play a role in maintaining your health over time.

And sometimes, preventative care means making sure your medications fit you.

When a prescriber determines that a customized medication is appropriate, a compounding pharmacy can help provide options such as a specific strength, dosage form, or formulation that may not be commercially available.

Because taking care of your health isn’t one-size-fits-all and sometimes the small details matter.

Small steps today can make a difference down the road. 🩺

Taking care of your mental health matters. 🧠

September was a reminder to check in not just with the people around us, but with ourselves.

Mental health is an important part of overall health, and finding the right treatment can sometimes take time.

For some patients, a medication may need to be available in a specific strength or dosage form. When a prescriber determines that compounding is appropriate, a compounding pharmacy can help provide more individualized medication options.

We may not be able to solve every part of someone's mental health journey, but we can help with one piece of it: making medications work for the individual patient.

Take care of yourself. Check in on someone you love. And don't be afraid to ask for help.
