We are excited to spotlight our new partnership with Hiawatha Homes! We have recently begun volunteering weekly at their activity center, to help keep their space clean while giving back to an organization doing meaningful work in our community.

Volunteering is about more than giving our time. It's an opportunity to build and strengthen vocational skills, support fellow nonprofits and experience the joy that comes from making a difference.

Thank you, Hiawatha Homes, for welcoming us into your space and giving us the opportunity to learn and grow!

We want to give a HUGE thank you to the Think Mutual Bank team for spending their Think Gives Day at ABC!

They painted a room, winterized our gardens, and tackled deep cleaning and organizing throughout our building.

Their hard work helps keep our building and grounds beautiful, and the amount of work they accomplish in just one day makes a tremendous difference for us throughout the year! We are so grateful they choose to spend their day with us and make such a meaningful impact at ABC.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

It’s a time to recognize the contributions of workers with disabilities and to look at what businesses can do to make employment more accessible and inclusive.

Accessibility isn’t just about physical spaces. It’s also about how we communicate, conduct meetings, share information, and create opportunities for people to participate.

Here are a few ways businesses can make their workplaces more accessible:

1. Make sure everyone can hear.
Use a microphone when speaking to groups, even when you think your voice carries well.

2. Rethink participation.
Instead of asking people to “stand up if…” give everyone options to participate, such as raising a hand, responding to a poll, or simply answering a question.

3. Build flexibility into meetings.
Virtual options, camera-off participation, and other flexible meeting practices can help employees manage disability-related barriers while staying connected.

4. Put information in writing.
Providing interview questions, meeting information, or other important details in advance can support people with auditory processing disabilities and others who benefit from written information.

5. Keep communication clear.
Use plain language, logical structure, accessible fonts, headings, and shorter sentences. Avoid unnecessary jargon and abbreviations.

6. Use inclusive language.
Choose terms like “accessible” rather than “handicapped” when referring to spaces, parking, facilities, or services.

7. Ask, don’t assume.
If someone has a disability, ask whether they need assistance rather than assuming they do. Respect their answer.

8. Speak directly to the person.
When someone with a disability is accompanied by another person, address the person with the disability directly unless they ask you to do otherwise.

9. Train your team.
Make sure employees understand the ADA, accessibility standards, and how to create a respectful and inclusive workplace.

10. Make accessibility ongoing.
Accessibility shouldn’t be a one-time project. Build it into workplace planning, policies, events, technology, and everyday decision-making and include people with disabilities in those conversations.

This Disability Employment Awareness Month, move beyond awareness and take action to make your workplace more accessible. An accessible workplace is one where people with disabilities have the opportunity to participate, contribute, grow, and succeed.

The ABC Houston County Annual Recognition Banquet is coming up on Thursday, October 22 at the La Crescent Event Center!

This year we are celebrating something extra special: 70 years of ABC. Since opening our doors in 1956, ABC has been shaped by incredible people, including the people we serve, dedicated staff, volunteers, families and community partners who have helped make our mission possible through the decades.

To celebrate 70 years of history, this year's banquet is a trip through the decades. Dress up as the decade you started at ABC and help us bring our history to life, from the 1950s all the way to today.

Register today by reaching out to one of our Houston County locations.

We look forward to an evening of recognition, memories and celebrating the outstanding people who have made 70 years of ABC possible. Here's to our history, our people and the many decades still ahead.

We are excited to celebrate Kim as the 2nd Quarter Winner of the Woodland Outstanding Worker (WOW) Award! 🌟

Kim has been doing an outstanding job working as independently as possible while completing her job tasks at Pettibone Boat Club and La Crescent High School. She also has excellent attendance, is always willing to lend a helping hand to her coworkers, and consistently brings a positive attitude to the workplace.

Kim is a wonderful representative of ABC and we are so proud of all she has accomplished!

Thank you for all you do, Kim! Keep up the great work! 🎊

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month!

Through our employment programs and services, people with disabilities are pursuing jobs that fit their interests, goals and lives. They are building connections, learning new skills and contributing to their community in a way that is meaningful to them.

Across Southeastern Minnesota, you will find people with disabilities working in grocery stores, hotels, restaurants, local businesses and so many other places. Their stories all look different, but each one reflects what can happen when people have access to opportunities, support and freedom to pursue their own goals.

Employment is more than a job. It can be a place to connect, grow, participate and be part of community life.

This October, we are proud to celebrate and highlight the people making community employment happen and the workplaces creating opportunities for everyone to participate.

Happy National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
