Please welcome Dr. Nolan Shen, who has joined our neuroradiology team.

Nolan is a true product of Minnesota. He did his undergrad at the U, his internship at Hennepin County Medical Center, and his diagnostic radiology residency back at the University of Minnesota, with medical school at Des Moines University in between. He spent this past year in Madison finishing a neuroradiology fellowship at the University of Wisconsin.

Glad to have you back in the Twin Cities, Nolan.

We're proud to sponsor Opus & Olives on Sunday, October 11 at the Saint Paul RiverCentre. We believe healthy libraries are part of a healthy community, and The Friends of the Saint Paul Public Library help keep ours strong by investing in the library's programs, spaces, and staff all year long. Opus & Olives is their biggest night of the year, with great authors and good company.

This year's lineup includes Liaquat Ahamed, Ham El-Waylly, Ayana Gray, and Nikesha Elise Williams. If you're a reader in the Twin Cities, it's a great evening.

Our recruiting team spent three nights in Chicago, meeting residents and fellows from Northwestern, Loyola, Rush, and the University of Chicago over dinner at Girl & the Goat, Cabra, and Gibsons.

Eight of our radiologists made the trip and talked with 66 trainees and their guests across the three nights. That's a lot of evenings away from home, and we're grateful to everyone who went.

St. Louis, Boston, and Chicago are in the books. Now we're off to Wisconsin and Iowa to meet more amazing talent.

Welcome to the team, Dr. Bastian!

Dr. Bastian is our newest neuroradiologist. He comes to us after completing his fellowship at Indiana University, following residency and medical school at Texas Tech in El Paso.

He grew up in Sugar Land, Texas, and when he's not reading studies, you'll find him playing chess or table tennis, or out backpacking. If there are any colleagues out there who play chess or table tennis, you have a new opponent.

Our recruiting road trip continued when 12 of our radiologists traveled to St. Louis this month to meet residents and fellows from WashU and Saint Louis University. They spent the evening answering questions about what practicing with Midwest Radiology is really like.

Thank you to everyone who made the trip and represented our group so well. And thanks to the St. Louis trainees who joined us.

Nine of our radiologists spent two nights in Boston this month, meeting residents and fellows from five of the city's top training programs.

That's a lot of time away from home and family. Thank you to everyone who went and shared their experience of practicing here with the next generation of radiologists.

What does active bleeding look like on a CT?

Dr. Robert Freed walks through it. Start with normal: on a non-contrast study, tissue looks like tissue. Give contrast, and on the arterial phase normal structures enhance brightly. A bowel wall lights up while the lumen stays dark. By the venous phase, that enhancement has washed out somewhat. That's the baseline against which everything else is read.

Now bleeding. The non-contrast phase shows nothing. On the arterial phase, a bright focus appears with fairly sharp borders. That's contrast leaving the vessel. Then comes the part that makes the diagnosis: on the venous phase the focus is bigger and its edges have gone murky. Radiologists call it amorphous. Contrast that's still inside a vessel doesn't behave that way.

So the finding isn't a single bright spot. It's the change between two moments in time.

The practical implication for anyone ordering these studies for any body part: a single phase can still establish active bleeding. But an arterial and a venous phase together let the radiologist compare, and sensitivity goes up when there's something to compare against.

Welcome Dr. Pranay Rao, our newest neuroradiologist.

Dr. Rao is an Eden Prairie native who went to Johns Hopkins, then the University of Rochester for medical school and residency, and then off to Mallinckrodt in St. Louis for his neuroradiology fellowship. Now he's back in the Twin Cities, and we're thrilled to have him here.

Outside of work: soccer, Minnesota sports, and working his way through the restaurant scene he's been away from.

The Masonic Cancer Center's first Illuminate Gala is Wednesday at Union Depot in St. Paul. It's a fundraiser for cancer research on World Cancer Research Day.

Their researchers work on why cancer starts, how to prevent it, how to catch it earlier, and how to treat it better. That third one is our world. What our radiologists are able to find, and how early we're able to find it, comes from research like theirs.

We're glad to be sponsoring it.

Doctors and health organizations are concerned that the U.S. is facing a "tripledemic" — a situation in which flu, COVID-19, and RSV spread at the same time. Children, adults over 65, and immunocompromised individuals are most at risk of critical illness, even death. Viruses spread easily and rapidly, so make sure you and your family are vaccinated against COVID and flu. Wearing masks in public places and washing hands often will lower risk.
