New in the Journal of the American Heart Association American Heart Association : a prospective, real-world study at The Christ Hospital in Cincinnati, led by principal investigator Dr. Santiago Garcia, evaluated EggNest® Enhanced Radiation Protection Devices (ERPDs) in the interventional lab.
What they found:
🔹Apron-free Reduction: Estimated annual collar dose for the primary operator of 25.5 mRem with EggNest® Complete. For context, according to the CDC, a 5-6 hour flight yields radiation exposure of ~3.5 mRem.
🔹 Protection for the Whole Team: With EggNest® Complete, total effective doses for the primary operator, assistant and circulating nurse were 1% of the ICRP annual maximum (5,000 mRem).
🔹 Ultralight Apron Performance: Pairing EggNest® with an ultralight 0.125 mm apron gave primary operators an even lower annualized dose of 1.4 mRem, versus 51.4 mRem under a traditional 0.5 mm apron with standard shielding (p < 0.001), meaning maximum radiation protection with minimal orthopedic strain.
As Dr. Garcia stated, "The EggNest system protects the entire team so they can choose to go apron-free or wear ultralight aprons that feel like a light vest. This comprehensive data provides interventional teams with an evidence-based pathway to significantly reduce orthopedic strain while enhancing radiation safety."
