My love for herbs began nearly 15 years ago during my doula training. Little did I know, I was already a few weeks pregnant with my son at the time.
That experience sparked a curiosity that has continued to grow over the years.
I started learning about different herbs, experimenting with teas, decoctions, cold infusions, and long infusions, and sourcing plants from some wonderful herb farms.
When we moved to Indiana, I finally had the opportunity to begin growing more of my own herbs. Learning to tend them, harvest them, dry them, and eventually enjoy them in a cup of tea has brought a whole new dimension to something I’ve loved for years.
And the more time I spend in the garden, the more I recognize how closely gardening and yoga are connected.
Neither is really about the final result.
In yoga, it’s not about how deeply you can move into a pose. It’s about the awareness you develop along the way. Learning to listen to your body, recognizing its rhythms, and noticing how those rhythms change from day to day.
Gardening asks for that same kind of attention.
You begin to notice what the plants need, how the soil changes, what each season brings. You learn through observation, experience, and sometimes through the things that don’t go as planned.
Each season builds on the last, just as each time we return to our yoga practice, we have another opportunity to learn something about ourselves.
There’s a deeper connection that develops when you get to know a plant from seed to harvest.
And maybe that’s what I love most about both practices. The relationship that develops through showing up, paying attention, and continuing to learn.
In the garden, we learn to listen to the land. In yoga, we learn to listen to ourselves. 🌿
