Ever hear of the concept in medicine called Spiritual Fitness? It is a newer field presently being defined which encompasses stress reduction, basic wellbeing , and psycho/spiritual wellbeing to prevent Alzheimer’s disease.

The authors of this study concluded that religious and spiritual practices are crucial components in the development of cognition and well-being and that these practices may help prevent and reverse cognitive decline. The authors discuss spiritual fitness to include patience, awareness, compassion and surrender. They suggest that meditation can mitigate negative biochemical effects of stress and if practiced with spiritual fitness may be one key to lowering the risk for Alzheimer’s Disease.

It can’t hurt and it might work!

Looking to make your food taste better and add some health benefits? Try garlic! One day I asked the produce manager if he had more garlic in the back. He replied “lowly garlic”… Boy did he get an earful from me! Enjoy that same earful!

Garlic is used across the globe in almost all cuisines, although many Americans associate it with Italian food. Each bulb has about 10-20 cloves. You need to remove the papery skin before chopping it.

One of the most powerful compounds in garlic is allicin. It is relatively unstable and is present after it is cut or crushed. Garlic also contains sulfur compounds which have beneficial effects in the body. Garlic is used by many traditional medicines for its powerful antimicrobial and antifungal properties. It is also understood that it helps the immune system function optimally. It helps to control or reduce blood pressure and aged garlic is particularly effective for that. It can help lower cholesterol levels. The powerful antioxidants in garlic may reduce the risk of cognitive decline and help to promote longevity.

It is truly delicious and I cook with it daily. I have gotten lots of great feedback on my Mediterranean Chicken recipe which calls for 8 cloves- but feel free to add more. Click the link in profile https://drdeenutrition.com/blog/f/mediterranean-chicken?blogcategory=Recipes.

Phytonutrients are antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds found abundantly in spices and herbs. These simple plant foods provide flavor to food and they impart characteristic flavor (sweet, sour, bitter, salty, umami) as well as provide acid and chemisthesis. In general, dried spices can provide beneficial effects and storing in an airtight container out of heat and light can help to preserve the benefits.

The exposome takes into consideration all forms of exposure. As you can see from the graphic, exposure happens in daily life from what people are eating and doing, to their experiences, to where they live and in what industry they work. This graphic depicts external stressors or areas for exposure. What I haven’t mentioned yet is that internal toxins can be created by the body, for example metabolites or wastes from microorganisms in the gut.

Examples of ecosystem exposure include urban vs rural green space and population density. Lifestyle factors for exposure include mostly controllable things like activity, sleep, food choices, smoking and ingestion of substances (alcohol, OTC drugs, prescriptions). Social factors sometimes cannot be avoided such as socioeconomic level, cultural norms, inequality and stress. Physical and chemical toxins are the most ubiquitous and insidious. They are also the ones least likely to be controlled such as pollutions, agricultural contamination, pollen/mold/fungus, fragrances, flame retardants, POPs, food contaminants, soil contaminants and general environmental contaminants.

Controlling exposure, eating plant foods as much as possible and being sure to minimize toxic thought patterns helps a great deal. Control what you can! Knowledge is power. My Watercress, Broccoli and Grape Salad wit Turmeric Tea Dressing supports detoxification systems and tastes good. Tamarind is used in cooking traditional dishes such as curries, sauces and some desserts or sweets. The pulp is often made into juice and drunk fresh or used as brines or infusions. The flour obtained from the dried and ground seeds which has a texture comparable to nut flours, can be used to make cakes and breads.

Tamarind is rich in phytonutrients that can act as antioxidants. Its fruit is used for atherosclerosis, abdominal pain, promote the effectiveness of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase. The seeds contain beneficial fatty acids, flavonoids and vitamins.

It is the only food containing the phytochemical tamarindienal which can be a candidicide and a fungicide. If you struggle with intestinal yeast or just want another tool to balance your gut, try consuming a bit of tamarind. You can purchase tamarind paste in the international aisle of most major grocery stores. Try your hand at Pad Thai which gets is sour flavor balance from tamarind. I am on the quest for the perfectly balanced home recipe for Pad Thai. Make a good one and make me jealous! Truth be told, I have made many a “decent” Pad Thai, but when you are a perfectionist, nothing short of authentic will do!

Do you have a Pad Thai recipe you will share with me? DM me if you do!!
