Adding to my resume on the horse Wellness side, I completed the Certification Course for TMJ Massage.
The TMJ of the horse is an area that often times gets overlooked as a rider. It’s easy to pass off the horse’s reaction or reluctance of a horse to have their head, ears and poll touched. Often times is misunderstood as them being headshy, someone pulled/twisted its ear, spooky, stubborn, abused, etc..
When in reality, most often it has to do with the tension and soreness in the TMJ that causes soreness in the area of the poll and around the ears.
* Tension turns into inflammation (which horses can Not release on their own).
* Inflammation causes pain
* Pain in one area of the body is compensated for within other areas of their body.
100% of the time, a horse has a reason for initiallyreacting the way they do. If no one listens to them, those “little quirks” become behavioral issues over time.
Massage is a wonderful and non-invasive way to help the horse release tension, enabling their body to move in synergy as it was built to do.
