๐ŸŒฑ Before the harvest comes the groundwork.

These photos take us back to our August 2024 farm-preparation visitโ€”a chapter in Sheba Farms Projectโ€™s teff-growing journey in California.

What happens before planting? Our first-stage work brought together three essentials:

๐ŸŒ Soil testing and preparation
๐Ÿ’ง Irrigation setup
๐Ÿšœ Clearing and leveling the land

A harvest is more than what we see at the end. It begins with planning, preparation and people working together. Sharing these early steps helps connect the food on our tables with the work behind it.

For us, teff also carries a connection to Ethiopian food traditions and the communities that keep them alive. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

What would you like us to explain next: teff, land preparation or the journey from grain to injera?

๐ŸŒพ Small seed. Deep roots. Meet teff.

If youโ€™ve enjoyed injera, youโ€™ve met one of Ethiopiaโ€™s most treasured grains. Teff is traditionally milled into flour and fermented to make that soft, tangy flatbreadโ€”a foundation of Ethiopian meals and shared tables.

At Sheba Farms Project, our journey connects this food heritage with California soil. From preparing the land to our teff harvest in Capay Valley, every stage is an opportunity to learn about where food comes from and the people who grow it.

๐ŸŒฑ Why does this matter? Growing familiar cultural foods locally helps keep food traditions alive and creates opportunities for communities to learn from one another.

Have you tried teff or injera? Tell us about your first taste. ๐Ÿ’š๐Ÿ’›โค๏ธ

๐ŸŒพโœจ "There's a saying that 'GOLD is in the GRASS.' Standing here in the beautiful Capay Valley, just an hour from Sacramento, I can truly say this is the case. ๐ŸŒŸ For the first time, we are harvesting Teff right here in California!

Native to Ethiopia, where it has nourished civilizations for millennia, this ancient supergrain is finding a new home in the West. At Sheba Farms, this harvest represents so much more than just food; itโ€™s about nutrition, history, and reclaiming our legacy on this land.

๐ŸŒฑ The Supergrain: Small Seed, Big Impact ๐ŸŒฑ
Let's dive into why Teff is such a miraculous crop:
๐ŸŒพ Gluten-Free: A perfect alternative for modern diets.
๐Ÿ’ช๐Ÿพ Iron-Rich: Naturally combats fatigue.
๐Ÿฅ› High Calcium: Packs more calcium per serving than nearly any other grain.

Join us in celebrating this incredible journey and the nutritious future we are cultivating! ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพโœจ

Citrus fruits like lemons and oranges arenโ€™t just refreshing. Theyโ€™re high in vitamin C, which supports the immune system and helps the body absorb iron (like the kind found in Teff!). ๐Ÿ‹๐ŸŠ
