I've been reading "The Five Invitations" by Frank Ostaseski, and one idea keeps coming back to me: there's more than one kind of hope.
Ordinary hope waits for something outside us to deliver what we want. Mature hope takes us inside ourselves, to the agency we actually have. It lets us stay open when life doesn't go the way we planned, and sometimes it shows us opportunities we never would have seen.
A coach I know and her husband showed me what that looks like, on a hiking trail in their mid-80s.
