Public health professionals often give advice that is so impractical that no one follows it.

There is no better example of this than dental dams.

This is a picture from my local Walgreens, where you will see every type of condom imaginable. You will not find a dental dam.

Generally speaking, people do not use protection during oral s*x.

Folks in public health HAVE to talk about what people SHOULD do. I like to talk about what people actually do, so we can actually prevent STIs.

It’s not uncommon to see a post from a public health agency encouraging people to use dental dams and get tested. The testing advice begins with “get” and ends with “tested.”

Here’s the problem. We do not live in a country where the average clinician has the knowledge necessary to screen someone thoroughly for STIs.

Better advice:
Use protection during oral s*x, but knowing that you likely will not, when you get an STI test, it is critically important that you get screened with an oral swab.

An oral swab is the only way to detect common, often asymptomatic bacterial STIs in the throat, including gonorrhea and chlamydia. Your physician may not be familiar with this screening method, but it's critically important to understanding your STI status.
