We rely on our muscles and tendons for nearly every move we make. Between daily life and more intense exercise or sports, they get a lot of use. Even with good warm-ups, regular stretching, and solid form, injuries can still pop up, usually in the muscles we use most.

One of those hard-working muscles is the hip flexor! Hip flexor injuries are usually strains, tears in the muscle fibers that cause pain and can make walking or moving difficult. The good news is that most heal well with simple care. Rest comes first. Once the initial pain settles, gentle exercises like pelvic tilts with marching and a kneeling hip flexor stretch can help restore strength and mobility. Start slowly, and back off if anything causes pain.

If your hip pain is hanging around, or you’re dealing with any other muscle or tendon injury, give us a call! We’d love to build a care plan tailored to your specific injury and goals.

Wrist, hand, or finger pain can come from several sources. Activities like working with your hands, working at a computer, rock climbing, performing certain hobbies and sports, or scrolling on your phone can all contribute to some issues.

If you're experiencing light pain or discomfort, stretching may help! One popular, simple stretch that can offer relief is known as "prayer hands," where you put both hands together like this: 🙏.

This stretch is done standing up or sitting in a chair, with your palms together in front of your chest, just below your chin. Then, keeping your hands close to your body, slowly and carefully lower them toward your waist until you feel a gentle stretch along the undersides of your forearms. Keeping your palms pressed together, hold the stretch for 15-30 seconds, then bring your hands slowly back up to where they began. Repeat 2-4 times.

Prayer hands can be done daily or twice daily, so long as it doesn't cause an increase in pain or discomfort. If it does, or if you notice numbness or tingling in your fingers, stop the stretching. Numbness and tingling can be signs of carpal tunnel syndrome, which this position can aggravate. In all cases, consider getting a consultation from a medical professional. We would love to help you put together a careful, customized plan for your wrist, hand, or finger pain.

Y'know, sometimes physical therapy exercises can seem a bit... odd. For instance, one of the go-to exercises for neck and upper-shoulder pain is the shoulder shrug! Exactly what you think it is, the shoulder shrug can be used to strengthen the trapezius, the muscle that runs across the tops of your shoulders and up into your neck, and it's a key part of strength programs shown to reduce neck and shoulder pain.

As many of you unfortunately know, our shoulders can start hurting seemingly out of nowhere; rotator cuff irritation, impingement, frozen shoulder, overworked neck and shoulder muscles, or injury can all cause pain and a limited range of motion. If you experience these symptoms, come see us! We'll evaluate what's going on and put together a personalized care plan to get your shoulders moving smoothly and feeling great again.

Everyone should know this stretch!

If you want to increase your mobility and flexibility, the cat-cow stretch is one of the best mobility exercises you can do. It's an amazing stretch for office workers dealing with back pain, athletes trying to engage their core, or anyone who wants a great daily mobility practice.

To perform this stretch, first get on your hands and knees, establishing a flat back, or what is called a "neutral spine." In yoga traditions, the stretch begins with a deep breath in as you bring your head up and let your spine dip, imitating a mooing cow. After pausing a moment, exhale and round your spine, like an angry cat.

The trick is to go slow, taking your time through the movement, working with your breath. This is not a stretch to be done quickly or aggressively. If you have difficulty getting to your hands and knees, or experience any pain working through the movement, don't continue. If you have concerns about performing the stretch, consult a medical professional before continuing.

This motion, in addition to strengthening the core and giving your back a great stretch, circulates fluid in your joints, which can reduce back pain. It is also just really relaxing, and everyone could use a little more relaxation.

If you're concerned about high blood pressure, also called hypertension, one of the best things you can do is begin a consistent exercise program! Regular exercise keeps your blood vessels flexible and helps your heart work more efficiently, lowering your overall blood pressure over time.

The more consistent you are with your exercise, the more benefits you get! Lowering your blood pressure reduces your risk of experiencing a stroke or heart attack, heart disease, dementia, kidney disease, and more.

The best news is that any form of exercise can help lower your blood pressure. That means that whatever you enjoy most, whether it be walking, running, swimming, playing sports, weightlifting, or competitive breakdancing, go for it! Your heart will thank you!

Now, as always, it's important to get medical advice on your own particular situation before starting a new exercise routine. For those with uncontrolled or severe high blood pressure, some forms of exercise may not be suitable at first, particularly heavy weightlifting.

If you're a working adult trying to stay active, odds are that you've signed up for a rec league team of some sport! Whether it's softball, basketball, soccer, ultimate frisbee, frisbee golf, or even just tossing a regular frisbee, there are three things you need to know to play safe.

First, don't over do it. Making that all-star play usually isn't worth it, especially if it means you pull a hamstring or sprain an ankle. It may seem like we're saying to not try so hard, but that's not it; just don't play at an intensity that you haven't practiced.

Second, always warmup! For playing sports, a dynamic warmup is best. Dynamic warmups feature continuous movements that mimic what you'll be doing in your sport, targeting muscles and joints that you'll be using the most.

Finally, be intentional in your recovery! Recovery doesn't just mean resting. It also means light exercises targeting sore muscles, taking time to work on mobility exercises, and getting the right nutrition. When you push your body, it's always best to give it some time, love, and care afterwards. It will thank you!

If you do unfortunately suffer an injury, we're here to help. We can make a recovery plan tailored to your needs, revolving around your schedule and activities.

We post a lot about different kinds of exercises that train various parts of your body to get various health benefits. Sometimes, though, these exercises can seem intimidating or hard to do. So, here are a few exercises that are perfect for when you want something simple and highly accessible!

1. Walking! This is the king of low-impact, simple, accessible exercise. Go on frequent walks during the day, or on one long one, or a mix of both!

2. Swimming! Take your kids to the pool, and bring your suit! Even just moving around in the water can take pressure off your joints and give you some good exercise.

3. Yoga! You may have seen highly difficult and advanced poses, but there are far more easy, relaxing, simple movements that anyone can practice.

4. Assisted body weight exercises! These come in the forms of chair-squats, wall-pushups, and dozens of other exercises that target various muscles in your body. These can be a great way to stay at home and still be active!

5. Casual sports! Whether it's rec league softball or kicking a ball against a wall, finding some sports to play is an amazing way to get your exercise in. Just make sure you warm up, stretch, and leave the highlight plays to the professionals.

Well, there's five different simple exercises that will help you to include more activity throughout your day. These exercises are great for people who work in offices, are starting to get active again, or just want to squeeze in five minutes of activity. As always, take things easy; make sure that if you have concerns about starting a new exercise routine, you speak to a medical professional that can address these concerns.

If you've spent a lot of time around sports or in anatomy class, you may have heard the term "fast-twitch muscle," or "Type 2 muscle fibers." These terms refer to the same thing: muscle fibers in your body that get used for short bursts of movement, like sprinting or jumping.

Fast-twitch muscles, like all of our muscles, can weaken as we age. Like all of our muscles, of course, they can be trained! It's important to train our fast-twitch muscles, as they often are muscles that help us avoid falls or change direction quickly when needed.

To train these muscles, you have to fatigue them. Activities like sprinting (see our last post for more on that!), weightlifting, High-intensity Interval Training (HIIT), and plyometric exercises. These activities require more intensity than what you might normally do, but provide an incredible workout, burn calories at a higher rates, improve neuromuscular coordination, and enhance athletic performance.

Now, these activities can cause more injuries than other exercises, so it is extremely important to be cautious when starting a new routine focused on fast-twitch muscles. Make sure you warm up thoroughly before the workout, cool down after the workout, and stretch between workouts. It would also be wise to consult a professional, such as a certified physical trainer or a physical therapist.

There's an incredible habit that we tend to drop as we get older, sometimes even as early as high school. It's sprinting! The exercise that kids do from the second they can walk until it's no longer cool to try in P.E.

Sprinting has some unique health benefits that are hard to get through other exercises. These include reductions in likelihood of heart disease, cancers, diabetes, chronic disease and strokes, as well as increases in metabolism, muscle mass, and whole-body fitness.

It doesn't take much to get these benefits, either! The American Heart Association recommends just 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week, but studies have indicated that sessions as short as 15 minutes can be beneficial.

For your first sprinting session, take things easy, such as 2 sets of 4–6 repetitions of 20–30 meter sprints, or multiple 10 second sprints over the course of 10 minutes.

As with any new fitness routine, you have to be careful. Any pain beyond muscle soreness and exertion is a sign to either stop or slow down. Sprinting is a particularly demanding exercise, so make sure you work in plenty of rest and stretching.

Foam rollers are one of those things you might see someone using at the gym or in a run club, but you may have been skeptical about trying one yourself. Rolling out your muscles can be a great way to both prepare for and recover from any strenuous exercise.

When you use a foam roller, you press down on muscle tissue and other connective fibers under your skin; in response, your body relaxes these tissues and fibers, which has several positive effects on performance (and it just feels great).

First of the benefits from foam rolling is the increase in range of motion. As our muscles tighten post work-out, we can become stiff and immobile, making recovery from an exercise a pain. Foam rolling helps alleviate this tightness, providing a short-term boost to our flexibility.

Additionally, some athletes who targeted muscles with foam rollers (or similar equipment) prior to exercising saw a slight increase in performance, likely from the added flexibility, and those who did it post workout found that it reduced their soreness.

So, if you want to try it out, you might find a foam roller at a local fitness center, or in any major retailer. It can be a good tool to help you stay flexible and active, but like anything in fitness, please use it with caution. If you have any questions, feel free to give use a call! We'd love to help!
