🚗 Is your child riding in the right car seat?

One of the most common questions we hear from parents is when their child should move to the next car seat.

The answer may surprise you! It is not just about age.

Your child’s height, weight, developmental readiness, and the manufacturer’s car seat limits all matter.

At Bloom Pediatrics, we recommend keeping children in each stage of car seat protection for as long as their seat safely allows.

Swipe through our car seat safety guide to learn more about rear facing seats, 5 point harnesses, booster seats, and seat belt readiness.

Remember that moving to the next stage sooner is not necessarily safer.

🤒 What’s Going Around in Northeast Florida?

It’s officially respiratory illness season, and there are several illnesses Northeast Florida parents should have on their radar right now.

🦠 Flu: Activity is beginning to increase across Florida as we enter flu season.

👶 RSV: RSV season has started, making it especially important to watch infants and young children for changes in breathing, feeding, and hydration.

😷 Croup and other respiratory viruses: Barky coughs, congestion, fever, and those lingering post viral coughs are making their seasonal appearance.

🖐️ Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease: Watch for fever, decreased appetite, painful mouth sores, and a rash or blisters on the hands, feet, or diaper area.

🩺 Strep: Fever, sore throat, headache, swollen lymph nodes, abdominal discomfort, and sometimes a fine red rash can be signs that your child needs testing.

🏠 What can parents do at home?

Focus on hydration, rest, nasal saline and gentle suction for little ones, a cool mist humidifier, and honey for cough in children over 1 year old.

Pay attention to your child, not just the thermometer. How are they breathing? Are they drinking and urinating? Are they alert and interacting with you?

🚨 Call us if you are concerned about difficulty breathing, dehydration, persistent or worsening fever, unusual sleepiness, significant pain, or a child who simply looks very sick.

And remember: Any baby younger than 3 months with a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher needs prompt medical evaluation.

🌡️ Your child has a fever. Now what?** Fever is the #1 thing parents search for online - so let’s clear up the confusion. 🧵👇

First: fever is a sign your child’s body is fighting infection. It is not a disease itself, and the number on the thermometer doesn’t tell you how sick your child is. How your child looks and acts matters far more than the exact temperature.

✅ What a fever is: a temperature of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher.

What actually helps:
- 💧 Keep fluids going - small, frequent sips. Staying hydrated matters more than “breaking” the fever.
- 🛏️ Let them rest. Dress them in light clothing.
- 💊 You can use acetaminophen or ibuprofen (ibuprofen only for infants 6 months and older) for comfort - not to force the number down. Follow the dosing on the label for your child’s weight, and never give aspirin to a child.
- 🌡️ Treat the child, not the thermometer. A happy, drinking, playing child with a fever often needs no medicine at all.

📞 Call our office or seek care if:
- Your baby is under 3 months with any fever of 100.4°F (38°C) or higher - this is always urgent.
- Fever lasts more than a few days, or keeps climbing.
- Your child is very hard to wake, unusually drowsy, or won’t stop crying.
- Trouble breathing, a stiff neck, a rash that doesn’t fade when pressed, or a seizure.
- Signs of dehydration: no tears, dry mouth, far fewer wet diapers.
- Your child looks very unwell even after the fever comes down.

❤️ The bottom line: Most fevers are your child’s immune system doing its job. Watch how your child looks and acts, keep them comfortable and hydrated - and trust your instincts. When in doubt, call us. Bloom Pediatrics is here to partner with you in the care of your child through sickness and in health. ❤️‍🩹

🌱LESS PLASTIC-HEALTHIER KIDS💪🏼

Plastics are part of everyday life, but reducing unnecessary exposure is one simple way we can create a healthier environment for our children.

Why does it matter?
Chemicals such as BPA can act as immune and endocrine disruptors and may affect hormonal signaling, inflammation, and immune regulation. Emerging research is also examining BPA as a potential environmental contributor to autoimmune disease, but this does not mean plastic exposure directly causes autoimmune disease.

5 simple changes to start today:

🥛 Swap the everyday items. Choose glass or stainless steel for cups, bottles, and food storage when practical.

🔥 Never heat food in plastic. Transfer food to glass or ceramic before heating. Try to avoid the microwave.

🍓 Choose food over packaging. Make fruits, vegetables, proteins, and other whole foods the norm; Avoid using pouches and ultra-processed packaged snacks.

🧸 Replace-don’t purge. As plastic toys and household items wear out, consider wood, stainless steel, glass, or other appropriate alternatives.

🌱 Focus on progress, not perfection. You don’t need a plastic-free home. Small, sustainable changes can reduce unnecessary exposures.

The goal isn’t to fear our environment—it’s to make informed choices about the things we can control. 💙💚

🌿 Learning, growing, and reimagining pediatric care!👶🏼

Bloom Pediatrics is excited to be attending the A4M Pediatrics Reimagined: The Future of Pediatric Medicine Summit! 💚

We came with a purpose: to take a deeper dive into integrative and functional approaches to pediatric care and explore how we can continue providing thoughtful, evidence-informed care that looks at the whole child.

As pediatric providers, we believe there is always more to learn. We want to better understand the connections between nutrition, gut health, immune function, lifestyle, environment, development, and overall wellness—and how these pieces may influence the health of the children and families we serve.

Our goal isn’t simply to treat symptoms. It’s to ask thoughtful questions, continue learning, and help families understand the why behind their child’s health while providing care that is individualized, practical, and grounded in good science.

We can’t wait to bring what we’re learning back home and continue growing Bloom Pediatrics into the kind of pediatric practice we believe families deserve. 🌱

Because when we continue to learn, we can continue to provide better care for our kids. 💚

🤱 Breastfeeding is natural. That doesn’t mean it always comes naturally👶🏼

Those first days can leave you wondering: Is this latch supposed to hurt? Is my baby getting enough? Am I making enough milk?

A few things to remember 🤍

🌸 Some tenderness with the initial latch can happen, but pain throughout the entire feeding is something we want to address.

🌸 Most newborns breastfeed about 8 to 12 times in 24 hours. Cluster feeding is normal and helps tell your body to make more milk.

🌸 By around day 5, we generally want to see 6 or more wet diapers each day and stools transitioning to that familiar yellow, loose, seedy appearance.

🌸 Babies normally lose some weight after birth, but we want to see that weight begin trending back up, with many babies returning to birth weight around 10 to 14 days.

Most importantly, you don’t have to navigate breastfeeding alone.

At Bloom Pediatrics, we come to you. We can assess baby’s weight, feeding, latch, hydration, and overall health right in the comfort of your home. Schedule a lactation counseling appointment with our lactation specialist: Jocelyn Bonfante, APRN, CLC through our website: bloompedsfl.com

And mama, remember: God chose you to be this baby’s mama. Give yourself grace as you both learn. 🤍
