The Lone Star tick is slowing making its way to NH. Females are reddish-brown with one bright white dot or "lone star" near the center of its back. Males lack the central spot but features varied white streaks or patterns around the outer edge of the back shield.

Here we compare a nymph blacklegged (deer) tick to an adult blacklegged tick. The nymph ticks are much smaller in size and therefore harder to see. When doing daily tick checks, feel for bumps and check spots that look like freckles or specks of dirt. Send as any ticks you find! We are tracking ticks and tick-borne diseases in New England.

Lone star ticks are becoming a bigger part of the New England tick picture. A recent study of Martha’s Vineyard found lone star ticks had expanded from two areas of the island to all six towns surveyed. Researchers also found they occupied a wider variety of natural and residential habitats than blacklegged (deer)tick nymphs, potentially making them harder to avoid.

Dog ticks, like the one pictured here, aren't much of a concern because they don't carry much disease in New England. Blacklegged (aka deer) ticks can carry Lyme disease in New England. We have found that about 40% carry disease in New Hampshire.
