Wide awake at bedtime. Talking, asking questions, suddenly remembering everything they meant to tell you today.

That is usually not a child refusing to go to bed. It is a body clock that hasn't reached sleepy yet.

Seeing it that way turns the bedtime battle from a power struggle into a problem you can solve together.

From our new ADHD and Sleep series with .

What time does your kid's second wind usually show up?

If you've taken away every privilege and your child is still doing the same thing, it is not defiance and it is not a parenting failure. The ADHD brain is not built to connect consequence to future choice the way we expect, especially when dysregulated. There is a different path, and it starts with understanding what the nervous system actually needs.

Send this to someone who still believes the right consequence will finally make it click.

When a child with ADHD melts down or ignores directions, it’s easy to assume defiance. But often, the truth is simpler: they are overwhelmed.

Two hours of video games. No breaks. Total focus.

Four minutes of homework. Tears. A thrown pencil. A meltdown.

If you have ever stood there thinking, "They are choosing not to focus," I understand. That thought makes complete sense from the outside.

But here is what is actually happening.

Video games deliver instant dopamine, constant feedback, and predictable rewards. The ADHD brain locks in because the environment does the heavy lifting.

Homework asks the prefrontal cortex to generate motivation without any of that support. That is a capacity difference, not a character flaw.

Your child is not being defiant. Their brain is working differently.

If your child can play video games for two hours straight and then fall apart over a five-minute worksheet, you have probably wondered if they are just choosing not to try. The brain science says something different.

The ADHD brain’s reward system responds differently. Video games are engineered to deliver exactly what that brain is craving which is immediate rewards, constant novelty, visible progress. Homework delivers almost none of that. And the transition off the game itself can send the nervous system into dysregulation before the first problem is even read.

I wrote the full post to name what is actually happening in those moments, because parents deserve a real explanation, not a behavior label. Read it at the link, and if you want a practical starting point, comment ASSESSMENT below and I will send you our free Executive Functioning and ADHD Quick Check by DM.

ADHD doesn't delete the pause button.

It puts it further out of reach. And when emotions run high, it moves further still.

That is biology, not character. So the goal isn't "just calm down." It is building ways to reach the pause a little sooner, one moment at a time.

What helps you find the pause when feelings run high?

If you feel like you are constantly repeating yourself and steering your kid back on track, you are not doing it wrong. The ADHD brain loses the thread. That is biology, not defiance. Your calm redirects are the scaffolding.

Save this for the next time the morning feels like it is all falling apart.

October is ADHD Awareness Month, so here is the picture I draw for almost every family who sits down with me.

One brain. Most of it is the smarts, and in these kids the smarts are often considerable. Out front sits a smaller region handling regulation, planning, prioritizing, and getting started.

Same brain. But that front piece is the last to finish building, and the first to lose signal.

It does not shut off. It loses bars. Too little sleep, too little food, too much stress, and the signal drops. The system still runs. It runs slow, and it drops things.

Which is why the reminder that worked on Tuesday does not work on Thursday. Nothing changed about your child’s character. The bars changed.

Have you ever wondered why your child can’t seem to plan ahead, remember what you just told them, or keep track of assignments? These struggles are often about executive skills, the brain’s management system.

"Executive skills are the air traffic control system of the brain." – Peg Dawson & Richard Guare

Understanding this is key to supporting your child.
