A registered dietitian is someone who studied nutrition and food science for 4-6 years. You can count on us at JTA Wellness to spark some inspiration for those quick convenient meal ingredients and snack staples. We know that there can be so much information on pantry foods and it can get confusing. Each of these listed here can fit into your diet, can be convenient, and provide fiber and micronutrients that benefit your long-term heart health and gut health! Check out these ideas by our dietitian Kelsie.
Click follow and share! ✨☺️👍

(1) Instant Barley & Lentils -- we get a handful of clients who want to increase fiber but need help and don't know where to start. Often, time is a barrier so instant packets can save you time.
(2) Canned Chickpeas -- Add these to salads or soups, to boost your fiber intake while also boosting protein intake! Chickpeas have both key nutrients and can be served cold or hot.
(3) Nuts & Seeds -- a baggie of trail mix doesn't always have to be packed with added sugar, but trail mix can always provide heart-healthy fats that help your body to fight inflammation and maintain sharp cognition. Keep these in your pantry for snacks and toppings into salads!
(4) Corn Chips -- at JTA Wellness, we don't believe in restrictive diets as chips can still fit! Of course, some chips like Siete brand can be a great gluten free option and is not too high in fat or sodium, which supports heart health. Add to soups, salads, dip into guacamole, hummus, or salsa!
(5) Canned Tomato Sauce -- sometimes we just need a backup ingredient for those times we didn't plan dinner. This sauce can be added to a serving of cooked pasta or veggies for flavor and micronutrients!
(6) Low-Fat Popcorn -- an afternoon crunchy snack just might be the best thing we need from time to time. Popcorn doesn't always need butter for that enjoyment and can still provide you fiber and crunch. Bring these to your work for a snack or pack them into your kids' lunchboxes.

🍂 WHAT’S IN SEASON THIS OCTOBER?

Fall brings some of my favorite produce! Here are a few to look for at the grocery store:

🍎 Fruits: apples, pears, cranberries, pomegranates, figs & grapes

🥕 Veggies: butternut, acorn, delicata & spaghetti squash, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, beets, carrots, parsnips, turnips, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage & kale

Why buy seasonal? Seasonal produce is often fresher, flavorful, and more affordable when it’s abundant. It’s also an easy way to add variety and different nutrients to your meals throughout the year.

And remember: fresh isn’t the only option! Frozen and canned produce can be nutritious, convenient, and budget-friendly too.

What’s your favorite fall produce? 🍁

Try our Southwestern Sweet Potato Hash Skillet Recipe and check out more on our website.

Ingredients
1 pound lean ground turkey breakfast sausage
1-1/2 cups sweet potatoes, cubed (~1 large sweet potato)
1 small red bell pepper, diced
1 small yellow bell pepper, diced
1/2 red onion, diced
1 jalapeno, seeds removed and finely diced
4 eggs
1/2 cup shredded reduced-fat Mexican blend cheese
1 Tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Toppings (optional): cilantro, diced green onions, avocado chunks, juice from lime wedges, etc.
Instructions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
In a large cast-iron skillet, brown the ground turkey sausage on medium heat, and crumble into pieces.
When the turkey sausage is fully cooked, remove meat from the skillet and set aside.
Add olive oil to the skillet and saute the red onion and sweet potatoes on medium heat for about 5 minutes.
Then stir in the bell peppers, jalapeno and spices (smoked paprika, garlic powder, cumin, salt and black pepper). Cook for about 15 minutes or until sweet potatoes are soft.
Make 4 wells in the hash and crack open an egg into each well.
Place the skillet in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes, or until eggs are cooked.
Remove from oven and sprinkle with shredded cheese and your desired toppings.

A Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RD/RDN) has specialized education, supervised clinical training, and national credentialing to provide evidence-based nutrition care.
So, what is Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT)?
MNT is nutrition care provided by a qualified dietitian to help manage or treat medical conditions through individualized nutrition interventions. It goes beyond general healthy eating advice.
MNT may be used for conditions such as:
• Diabetes and prediabetes
• High cholesterol
• Kidney disease
• GI conditions like IBS
• Heart disease
• Food allergies and intolerances
• And more
Your dietitian considers your medical history, medications, labs, symptoms, lifestyle, food preferences, and goals to create a personalized plan that works for you.
Nutrition care should be personalized, evidence-based, and appropriate for your health needs.
📍 Ask your healthcare provider if MNT with an RD/RDN may be right for you.

Happy Fall, Y'all! ☺️🍂
Fall is a great time to make small, simple additions to the foods you already love. We suggest adding fiber-rich foods to meals/snacks! Adding a little more fiber to meals can bring many benefits! Fiber supports healthy digestion, keeps you feeling full, helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol, and feeds your beneficial gut bacteria.

One of the benefits of adding fiber-rich plant foods into meals/snacks, like what's found in apple skins is that they also provide polyphenols. 🍎 Polyphenols are naturally occurring compounds that can act as antioxidants, and they can combat chronic inflammation in the body. ❤️‍🩹 They can be found in many plant foods like berries, vegetables, nuts, tea, and whole grains.
