If your provider has prescribed a biologic, you may have heard the word biosimilar and wondered what it means for you. Here is a plain explanation.
Biologic medications are made from living cells rather than from a chemical formula, and they are used for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, multiple sclerosis, and immune deficiency. Because they are large, complex molecules, most are given as an injection or an infusion rather than as a pill. A biosimilar is a biologic that the FDA has approved as highly similar to a biologic already on the market, with no clinically meaningful differences in safety or effectiveness.
Cure Stat Rx dispenses biologics and biosimilars across a broad range of conditions, and Cure Stat Infusion Services administers biologic infusions in our Ambulatory Infusion Suite and in your home. Your prescriber decides which product is right for you, and your insurance plan sometimes influences which one is covered. We tell you what your plan covers and what it will cost before your first dose.
The FDA keeps a set of patient materials that explain biosimilars in everyday language at https://www.fda.gov/drugs/biosimilars/patient-materials.
Biosimilars are safe and effective medications for treating many illnesses such as arthritis and cancer
