Karen Burg, Massage Therapist, Physical Therapist Assistant

While working as a Physical Therapist Assistant, I realized early on how important the mind/body connection affected healing, and the importance of treating the whole person. I was first introduced to the John Barnes Myofascial Release approach in 1994 after a back injury. I had tried all the typical therapies where I would get a bit better, but the results didn't last. I found a Physical Therapy clinic that only practiced John Barnes MFR just by chance. It was THE game changer! I was able to return to all the sports I loved including swimming, kayaking, river rafting and sailing, pain free!! I knew then I had to learn these techniques so I could help others. I attended my first John Barnes courses in 1995 and have continued my studies with him as well as participate in study groups and am a John Barnes Myofascial Release Seminar occasional Assistant Instructor.

Saw this in another post. I think this is fascinating.

👂 Why do some people hear ringing, buzzing, or hissing when the room is completely silent? And could that sound be warning you about something serious? 🔔

This mysterious sensation is called TINNITUS—the perception of sound without an external sound source.

It may be temporary, persistent, or associated with hearing problems. And surprisingly, the cause isn't always inside the ear!

🔬 6 important causes of tinnitus:

🔊 1. Loud Noise Exposure
Concerts, headphones at excessive volumes, and workplace noise can damage delicate inner-ear sensory cells, sometimes causing permanent tinnitus.

🟤 2. Earwax Impaction
Excessive earwax can block the ear canal, causing muffled hearing, fullness, and sometimes ringing. Symptoms may improve after safe removal.

👵 3. Age-Related Hearing Loss
As hearing gradually declines, particularly at higher frequencies, tinnitus becomes more common.

🌪️ 4. Ménière's Disease
An inner-ear disorder associated with episodes of vertigo, fluctuating hearing loss, tinnitus, and ear fullness.

💊 5. Ototoxic Medications
Certain antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and high doses of some pain relievers may trigger tinnitus or hearing damage.

🦷 6. Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) Disorders
Jaw problems, teeth grinding, and muscle tension may contribute to tinnitus or change its intensity.

🧠 Here's the fascinating part:

Tinnitus isn't always caused by an actual sound in the ear. Changes in auditory nerve signaling and how the brain processes sound can contribute to the sensation.

💡 Clinical pearl: Tinnitus that pulses in time with your heartbeat is called pulsatile tinnitus. It may have a vascular cause and deserves medical evaluation.

🚨 When should you seek medical attention?

• Sudden hearing loss with tinnitus — seek emergency assessment.
• Tinnitus affecting only one ear, especially with hearing loss.
• Pulsatile tinnitus.
• Tinnitus with new weakness, severe vertigo, or other neurological symptoms — seek urgent care.

🎧 Protect your hearing: Limit loud noise exposure, use hearing protection, and avoid inserting cotton swabs deep into the ear canal.

💜 CAN MY PELVIS REALLY AFFECT MY JAW?

It may sound surprising, but your jaw and pelvis don’t function in isolation.

They are connected through your posture, muscles, nervous system, and the continuous fascial web that surrounds and supports your entire body.

When the pelvis is rotated, tilted, or restricted, your body may compensate upward through the spine, rib cage, shoulders, neck—and eventually the jaw.

You may notice:

✨ Jaw tightness or clenching
✨ Clicking or popping
✨ Headaches or migraines
✨ Neck and shoulder tension
✨ Uneven bite or facial tension
✨ One hip feeling higher than the other

The connection can work in the opposite direction, too. Dental procedures, tongue restrictions, airway challenges, trauma, or chronic jaw tension may contribute to compensatory patterns throughout the body—including the pelvis.

This is why, during John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, I don’t focus only on the place that hurts.

If you come to me with jaw pain, I may assess your pelvis, spine, diaphragm, neck, cranial system, and even old scars.

Your symptoms may be showing up in your jaw—but the larger pattern could involve your whole body.

💜 Your jaw and pelvis may be farther apart than you think, but your fascia connects the conversation.

Have you ever experienced both jaw tension and hip or pelvic discomfort?

💜 WHY DO I FEEL SO CALM AFTER MYOFASCIAL RELEASE?

You may come in feeling tense, overwhelmed, disconnected, or unable to slow your thoughts—and leave feeling grounded, peaceful, and more present in your body.

That calm isn’t “just in your head.”

Fascia is richly supplied with sensory nerve endings and is constantly communicating with your nervous system.

During John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, gentle, sustained pressure allows time for you to slow down, breathe, and become aware of areas where you may be unconsciously bracing or protecting.

As your body begins to feel supported, you may notice:

💜 Deeper, easier breathing
💜 Less muscle guarding
💜 A quieter mind
💜 A sense of warmth or softness
💜 Feeling more grounded and connected
💜 Improved rest or sleep afterward

Rather than forcing your body to relax, we create the conditions that may help your nervous system shift out of survival mode and toward rest, recovery, and regulation.

Sometimes you don’t realize how much tension you’ve been carrying until your body finally feels safe enough to let some of it go.

🧠💜 THE DURAL TUBE: THE PROTECTIVE SLEEVE AROUND YOUR CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM

Deep inside your spinal canal is an incredibly important structure called the dural tube.

The dural tube is formed primarily by the dura mater, the tough outermost meningeal layer surrounding the spinal cord. It extends from the cranial cavity down through the spinal canal, protecting the delicate structures of the central nervous system.

✨ WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The dural system helps:

🧠 Protect the brain and spinal cord
💧 Contain the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the spinal cord
🛡️ Provide mechanical protection and support
🔗 Create continuity between the cranium and spinal canal
⚡ Protect the nerve roots as they exit toward the body

Because the dura is mechanically connected within the skull and spinal canal, tension in one region may influence how forces are transmitted through the system.

Think about what your body experiences throughout a lifetime:

✨ Birth compression
✨ Falls and sports injuries
✨ Whiplash
✨ Concussions
✨ Surgery
✨ Dental and orthodontic procedures
✨ Chronic postural strain
✨ Scar tissue and fascial restrictions

These forces don’t necessarily stay isolated to the place where they occurred.

💜 THIS IS WHY WE LOOK AT THE WHOLE BODY.

In John F. Barnes Myofascial Release, we don’t simply chase symptoms.

We assess the fascial system, pelvic alignment, spine, cranium, sacrum and areas of restriction that may be contributing to the pattern.

Gentle, sustained Myofascial Release and craniosacral techniques can be used to address surrounding soft-tissue restrictions and help the body move with greater ease.

Your neck may not be just a neck problem.

Your headaches may not begin just in your head.

Your tailbone may not be just a tailbone problem.

The body is interconnected—and the dural system is one fascinating part of that connection.

💜 Treat the whole person, not just the symptom. I got to treat my Dad’s dural tube yesterday & he has been a skeptic but now he says MFR heals!

THE PSOAS: A DEEP MUSCLE WITH A BIG ROLE IN BACK PAIN 💜

If your low back keeps hurting, the problem may not be only in your back.

Meet the psoas—one of the deepest muscles in the body and an important connection between your spine, pelvis, and legs.

📍 WHERE IS THE PSOAS?
The psoas major originates along the lumbar spine, travels deep through the abdomen and pelvis, and joins the iliacus before attaching to the upper femur.

Because of this location, it has a direct relationship with the low back, pelvis, hips, posture, and movement.

✨ WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?

The psoas helps you:

• Flex your hip
• Stabilize the lumbar spine
• Walk, run, and climb stairs
• Coordinate movement between your trunk and legs
• Maintain functional positioning of the spine and pelvis

When the psoas becomes tight, guarded, overworked, or restricted, it can influence the mechanics of the lumbar spine and pelvis.

⚡ THE PSOAS + BACK PAIN

A restricted or overactive psoas may contribute to:

→ Low-back discomfort
→ Hip or groin tension
→ Difficulty standing fully upright
→ Pelvic imbalance
→ Increased lumbar compression or altered spinal mechanics
→ Discomfort after prolonged sitting
→ A feeling that stretching your back never quite gets to the problem

This is one reason I don’t automatically treat where the pain is.

If your back hurts, I’m also looking at your pelvis, hips, psoas, diaphragm, abdominal fascia, legs, and the fascial connections throughout your entire body.

💜 THE PSOAS DOESN’T EXIST IN ISOLATION.

In Myofascial Release, we look beyond one muscle and assess the larger fascial system.

Sometimes lasting change comes from addressing the restrictions that are pulling on the painful area—not repeatedly chasing the pain itself.

Your back pain may be the messenger.
The source of the tension may be somewhere else.

Treat the front of the back! The Psoas!

Have you ever had your psoas assessed or treated?

✨ Top 5 Reasons Celebrities Are Choosing Myofascial Release for Healing ✨

When your body is your career, taking care of it isn’t a luxury—it’s a necessity. More celebrities, performers, and public figures are turning to John F. Barnes Myofascial Release because it goes beyond masking symptoms and helps restore the body from the inside out.

⭐ 1. Faster Recovery
Long filming days, concerts, travel, and demanding schedules place constant stress on the body. Myofascial Release helps reduce fascial restrictions that may contribute to pain, stiffness, and limited mobility.

⭐ 2. Better Movement & Performance
Whether acting, dancing, singing, or performing on stage, freedom of movement matters. Healthy fascia allows the body to move more efficiently and naturally.

⭐ 3. Stress & Nervous System Regulation
Life in the spotlight can be physically and emotionally demanding. Gentle, sustained Myofascial Release helps support nervous system regulation, allowing the body to shift toward a state where healing and recovery are more accessible.

⭐ 4. Injury Prevention
Old injuries, repetitive movements, and compensation patterns can build over time. Addressing fascial restrictions may improve balance, alignment, and movement quality before they become larger problems.

⭐ 5. Looking and Feeling Their Best
Healthy fascia supports posture, breathing, circulation, and fluid movement throughout the body. When the body moves better, people often feel more energized, more comfortable, and more confident.

✨ Healing isn’t just about treating pain. It’s about restoring the body’s natural ability to function, adapt, and thrive.

Whether you’re walking the red carpet or chasing your kids around the house, your body deserves the same level of care.

💜 You don’t have to be a celebrity to feel like one!
