Perchloroethylene (PCE) and Trichloroethylene (TCE) are common solvents used in dry cleaning and industrial operations that can impact indoor air quality and groundwater. These compounds may migrate into buildings through a process known as v***r intrusion, posing serious potential health risks over time.

At Healthy Building Science, we provide:
• Indoor air testing for PCE & TCE
• Water testing for PCE & TCE
• Soil testing for PCE & TCE
• Expert interpretation and guidance

Whether you're located near a current or former dry cleaner, industrial site, or just want peace of mind, our team can help identify and assess potential exposure risks.

Musty smells or unpleasant odors in your home or office? 🚫

These odors are often a sign of hidden moisture, mold, or poor indoor air quality.

Healthy Building Science offers (IAQ) Indoor Air Quality, Mold & Moisture inspections, along with targeted testing to help verify, locate, and identify the source of foul odors—so you can address the problem at its root.

Because masking odors doesn’t fix the problem—finding the source does.

Did you know that the air you breathe indoors can be 2–5× more polluted than outdoor air? Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can trigger headaches, allergies, respiratory issues—and over time, compromise your overall well-being.

At Healthy Building Science, we believe that every building should be more than walls and a roof. It should be a living environment that supports health, productivity, and comfort.

🌿 Why IAQ Matters:

✅ Protects health & productivity — cleaner air reduces illness, fatigue, and cognitive decline
✅ Ensures compliance with regulations, certifications, and employer obligations
✅ Minimizes risk of legal or financial penalties from non-compliance
✅ Preserves building value by preventing mold, corrosion, and system failures

🔧 Steps Toward Cleaner Indoor Air:

Ventilation optimization — bring in enough fresh, filtered outdoor air
Filtration upgrades — use high-efficiency filters (MERV 13 or better where feasible)
Source control — eliminate or reduce pollutant sources: low-VOC materials, no smoking, routine maintenance
Monitoring & testing — measure IAQ (VOCs, CO₂, particulates, humidity) to verify and adjust
Regular maintenance — HVAC cleaning, moisture control, timely repairs

✅ How We Help:

At Healthy Building Science, we specialize in:
— Indoor Air Quality Inspections & Testing
— Mold & moisture assessments
— Environmental testing & consulting (water, soil, air, surface)
— Environmental Inspections (IAQ, Mold & Moisture, Lead & Asbestos, EMF)
— General Contracting & Green Building
— Home Maintenance Subscriptions

If you want your building to support health — not hinder it — let’s get started. Contact us today for a free consultation.

🌱 Green Building Myths — Busted!

When people hear “green building,” they might think of something complicated, expensive, or unusual. Let’s set the record straight:

❌ Myth 1: It’s weird-looking
✅ Fact: Most green homes look just like any other — the difference is what’s inside (efficient systems, healthier materials, high-quality design & construction).

❌ Myth 2: It’s just about solar panels
✅ Fact: Solar is one small piece. Green building is also about air quality, water efficiency, insulation, and durable design - just to name a few.

❌ Myth 3: It’s outside my budget
✅ Fact: Green design can save you money over time through lower energy and maintenance costs.

❌ Myth 4: It doesn’t affect me
✅ Fact: Better materials and systems = healthier air, fewer allergens, and a more comfortable home.

❌ Myth 5: It’s all about recycled materials
✅ Fact: Recycled materials are great, but green building is really about health, efficiency, long-term savings, and overall a higher quality home.

💡 With Home Stewards, we help maintain and improve your home so you can enjoy the benefits of greener, healthier living — without the myths.

🛑 Formaldehyde in Your Office or Home?

Formaldehyde (HCHO) is a volatile organic compound (VOC) found in the adhesives of many common products, including:

🪵 Interior plywood, MDF & particleboard
🏠 Exterior plywood, OSB & engineered wood
🧩 Flooring underlayment, carpet & glues
🎨 Vinyl flooring & glues
🪟 Wall coverings & glues
🧱 Insulation

⚠ Why it matters:
Formaldehyde off-gasses into your air, irritating eyes, nose & throat, triggering asthma, and increasing long-term health risks.

✅ What you can do:
- Choose low-VOC or no-added formaldehyde products
- Ventilate well, especially after renovations
- Get professional air testing for peace of mind

Myth vs Fact: Mold Edition 🦠

❌ Myth: If you can’t see mold, you don’t have it.
✅ Fact: Mold often hides behind walls, under floors, and in crawl spaces or attics where it’s not visible.

Moisture problems don’t always leave obvious signs until damage is advanced. That’s why professional inspections and air testing are so important for catching hidden issues early.

Undetected mold can cause musty odors, allergy symptoms, brain fog, fatigue, and a wide range of other health concerns. Everyone’s body responds differently, but one thing is certain: mold exposure is always best avoided.

🔎 Suspect hidden mold? Don’t wait until it spreads — schedule an indoor air quality or mold inspection today.

👉 Drop a “✔️” in the comments if you’ve ever discovered mold hiding where you least expected it!

Lead in drinking water often comes from older plumbing and corrosion — and you may not even notice until testing reveals it.

At Healthy Building Science, our water testing helps you:
✔️ Detect discoloration, unusual odors, or tastes in your water
✔️ Help locate the source of deteriorating & corroding plumbing
✔️ Identify lead and other heavy metals
✔️ Determine if plumbing is leaching contaminants (a sign of corrosion or deterioration)
✔️ Verify whether your filters and plumbing are working as intended
✔️ Test for bacteria (coliform, E. coli), nitrates, chlorine, and more
✔️ Measure pH, hardness, and overall water quality indicators
✔️ Get a clear, actionable lab report for your peace of mind and health

Why it matters:
👶 Lead exposure is especially harmful to children and pregnant women.
🏫 Schools and child care centers are required by law to test for lead in drinking water.
💡 Homeowners, businesses, and property managers can catch problems early before they become costly or dangerous.

🌡️🍃 Does temperature affect mold growth?

Yes — but not in the way most people think! Mold doesn’t appear just because it’s hot or cold. Mold needs three key ingredients to thrive:

1️⃣ Moisture – the #1 driver of mold growth.
2️⃣ Organic material – wood, drywall, dust, fabrics, etc.
3️⃣ The right temperature range – most molds grow best between 60–80°F (room temperature).

👉 Temperature alone rarely causes mold. Instead, it’s when moisture and humidity combine with that comfortable temperature range that mold can spread quickly.

✅ Takeaway: Controlling moisture and humidity is the most effective way to prevent mold indoors. Temperature matters, but it’s usually just one piece of the puzzle.

🔎 Concerned about mold in your home or building? Our team at Healthy Building Science can help with inspections, testing, and practical solutions.
