Medic Mobile Building tools for people who care. Medic builds world-class, open-source software that supports health workers delivering equitable care that reaches everyone.

Medic serves as the technical steward and a core contributor to the Community Health Toolkit (CHT), an open-source platform that supports health workers as they provide essential care in their own communities. We are part of a movement for global health equity aimed at changing how health systems work and how technology powers those systems. Medic's global team of innovators is 90+ strong, dispersed across more than 14 countries, 32 cities, and all time zones. We create resources, build documentation, and offer support to a growing community of partners and builders working to improve health in the hardest-to-reach communities. What does it really cost to host the CHT for your digital health system? We finally have an answer we can stand behind.

We went from:
A best guess informing cost estimates โ–ถ๏ธ 3 years of production data from 30 live instances.
A month of developer time to build โ–ถ๏ธ one week, with AI.
"It depends" โ–ถ๏ธ 9 cents per health worker per month, adjustable to your deployment.

Partners are already using it to plan their next deployments.

Some exciting news from UNGA last week ๐ŸŒ

The Community Health Toolkit has won the Award for Digital Inclusion by and โ€” for bringing digital tools to the frontline workers and communities that health systems reach last.

Grateful for this global recognition that belongs to: 182,000+ community health workers โ–ถ๏ธ 24 countries โ–ถ๏ธ 47 partner organizations. All creating one open-source toolkit that serves as critical public infrastructure.

To every health worker, ministry, partner and contributor who built this with us โ€” thank you.

76% of community health workers surveyed are already using AI.

But only 15% of the tools were designed with them.

That disconnect is the subject of Episode 3 of Ground Truth, a new series from Medic bringing conversations around AI to the last mile of care.

We're joined by Community Health Impact Coalition's Dr. James O'Donovan and Lwala Community Alliance's Benard Otieno, to understand what โ€˜support, not replaceโ€™ actually looks like at the doorstep.

When tech fails, who pays the price?

For Episode 3 of our new series Ground Truth, join Shreya Bhatt, supported CHW Benard and CHIC's Dr. James O'Donovan to understand what AI must learn from the people closest to care.

We have a narrow window of opportunity to get AI for community health right.

And that window is closing. Fast.

Here are 6 new CHT features you need to know about...

๐Ÿ”— API endpoints: Makes it easy to identify users who have had replication failures (critical to sustaining ever-increasing CHT deployments)

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ New version of CouchDB: Brings a 60% improvement in indexing performance.

๐ŸŽจ UI extensions: App developers can now build configurable pages in the CHT!

๐Ÿ“Collapsible contact summaries: Reduces vertical scrolling on content-heavy pages

๐Ÿ“‹ Tab customizations: Allows deployments to order and choose which tab a CHW sees when they open their app

Hamida used to dread the questions her community health workers brought her. Not because she didn't care, but because she didn't have time to find the answers.

Episode two of Ground Truth is here, and it takes us all the way to the ground. Andra Blaj talks with Abbas Wandella of D-tree about the AI assistant they built to support supervisors like Hamida, to help her make sense of the data she already had.

They also talk about something bigger: what it really takes to grow a small pilot into a system a whole government owns and trusts. Abbas's answer might surprise you...

AI is being defined right now: its purpose, its limits, who it's really built for. But most of that conversation is happening far away from the people closest to care.

That's why we started Ground Truth: a new monthly conversation series where we bring AI back to the doorstep โ€” to community health workers, implementers, and the people building the tools they rely on.

Episode one is live with Raffi Krikorian, CTO of , who joins us for an honest conversation about AI, ownership, and what it takes to build technology that actually serves the last mile of care.

They talk through what "owners, not renters" means for a community health worker with a six-year-old phone and no signal, whether offline AI is ready to help her today, and who gets to decide what "good enough" looks like when the people affected have the least power in the room.

The future of digital health across Africa is here.

We're thrilled to introduce Medic Afya: a new digital health hub for African-led innovation, emerging from Medic.

For 15 years, we've believed that true local ownership means experts on the ground holding real decision-making authority over sovereign health systems. Medic Afya is how we're putting that belief into practice.

It's fully independent, Kenya-based, and African-led, carrying forward the same team that has driven this work for over a decade, embedded in the communities, governments, and health systems they serve.

Leading this next chapter is Dr. Ryan Nyotu, one of Kenya's foremost digital health leaders and Medic Afya's inaugural Executive Director.

We're launching something new...but it's a conversation long overdue.

In the world of AI, 'ground truth' represents verified, real-world data: the actual answer you check a model against.

In community health, ground truth is what's happening at the doorstep โ€” the health worker, the patient, the conversation that happens in a village far from any boardroom or conference.

AI is being defined right now. Its purpose, its limits, and who gets to shape it. Most of that conversation is happening far from the people closest to care.

That's what Ground Truth is about: bringing it back.

Starting in June, we're sitting down with community health workers, implementers, technologists, funders, and the builders working at the last mile to ask what AI really needs to learn if it's going to unlock health for all.

We know the questions around AI don't have a single, one-size-fits-all answer. But we'll be sharing honest conversations that bring us one step closer. The kind you can only have when people with genuinely different vantage points are given space to think out loud.
