Fall is here 🍂 A little seasonal wisdom from Chinese medicine.

The farmers market is starting to look like autumn. Pumpkins, pears, and the prettiest fall flowers.

In Chinese medicine, autumn is associated with the Lungs. It’s a season of slowing down, turning inward, and nourishing ourselves as the air becomes cooler and drier.

Two simple foods I love this time of year:

🍐 Steamed pears — Traditionally used in Chinese food therapy to moisten dryness and support the Lungs. Simply steam a pear until tender. Add a few goji berries if you like.

🎃 Steamed pumpkin — Naturally sweet, warming when served hot, and wonderfully comforting. In Chinese medicine, pumpkin is traditionally associated with supporting the Spleen and digestion. Just slice, steam, and enjoy.

Sometimes taking care of ourselves doesn’t need to be complicated. A warm meal, a slower morning, and a little attention to the changing seasons.

Eat with the season. Live with the season.

With love from The Little Pin 🍁

Some of the little things that make our studio feel special come from the people we love. 🤍

Meet Kimberly Austin, the artist behind Kim Austin // Austin Press , whose beautiful candles bring warmth and a signature scent to our clinic. We love having her work in our space and sharing a little piece of her creative world with you.

Austin Press is opening its studio today and tomorrow, October 10–11, from 11 am to 6 pm. If you’re in San Francisco, stop by the Noonan Building to explore her candles, letterpress cards, and other beautiful creations, and take a peek inside her gorgeous studio space.

And if you can’t make it this weekend, you can always find her candles here at the clinic or on her website.

So happy to share the work of someone so special to us. 🤍

Ahnee and her husband Justin have welcomed my whole family into their beautiful rose garden for different holidays throughout the year — each one more special than the last.

Ahnee and I met as two women who walked away from what we were “supposed” to be doing — and became Chinese medicine practitioners instead. When I was ready to start my own practice, Ahnee was the one who believed in me first, renting me space in her own beautiful clinic at the Marina to help me get it off the ground.

We could have been the kind of colleagues who keep score. Instead, since school, we’ve just been in each other’s corner — and through all of it, our friendship just keeps growing, in the clinic, in motherhood, in every part of life.

Some are built later, around a shared belief in this ancient medicine — natural, integrated, healing the body the way it was always meant to be healed.

More gardens. More apples. More us 👯‍♀️.

Somewhere between summer camp drop-offs, family trips, and passports finally put away… summer quietly wrapped itself up. 🌅 This summer gave us all of it — new skills at camp, new memories on the road, and now… new excitement for school. The kids can’t stop talking about seeing their friends again, and that energy is everything. SF mornings like this one remind me it’s a new chapter for all of us — theirs starts in the classroom, mine starts with getting back to me. 🌊🌸

Hi, I’m Ivy Hu.

SAN FRANCISCO ACUPUNCTURIST, TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE PRACTITIONER, AND BOARD-CERTIFIED HERBALIST

Born in China and coming of age in the US, I was raised around Traditional Chinese Medicine and always knew it to be a time-honored path toward better living. It wasn’t until I rediscovered it as an adult that my life (and health) changed, which inspired me to leave my corporate career of 12 years behind and become a Licensed Acupuncturist and Doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

With more than 5,500 hours of academic and clinical training in Chinese medicine theory, western medicine, acupuncture, herbology, and nutrition, my methods are holistic and integrative. In my practice, I combine cultural heritage, professional insight, and personal experience. I connect Traditional Chinese medicine theories with a comprehensive understanding of anatomy to effectively treat chronic or acute pain.

As a mom of two, I know how challenging it can be to manage your health alongside your work, raising children, and the ups and downs of modern life. My mission is to bridge the gap between traditional healing and modern wellness so you can find balance and embrace a healthier lifestyle. Whether patients seek less medication reliance, improved mobility, or getting back to regular routines, it never ceases to amaze me how many benefits patients see from acupuncture.

Just as I navigate the challenges of modern life and find healing through acupuncture and natural remedies, I hope you experience your own journey of self-discovery and wellness when you experience acupuncture for yourself.

Summer again. ☀️

The heat. The beach. The ice cream that melts faster than you can eat it. Kids laughing outside until the sun goes down.

Some seasons you endure. This one — you live.

Go all in. Soak every bit of it up.

We’ll be here when you get back. 🌊

🌿 Fresh from the farmer’s market: Amaranthus Green (莧菜) 🌿

Today I picked up a bundle of vibrant amaranthus — one of those humble leafy greens that quietly carries powerful nourishment.

Often overlooked, amaranthus is actually a seasonal treasure, especially as we move into late spring and early summer.

🌱 From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective:

Amaranthus is considered cooling in nature. During this time of year, when the weather becomes warmer and the body tends to accumulate internal heat, it helps to:

Clear heat
Cool the blood
Support digestion
Promote gentle detoxification
It’s especially helpful if you’re feeling heaty — think sore throat, irritability, acne, or dry mouth.

🥬 From a Western nutrition perspective:

Amaranthus leaves are packed with:

Iron – supports energy and healthy blood
Calcium & magnesium – for bones and muscle function
Vitamin C – immune support and antioxidant protection
Fiber – supports gut health
Plant-based protein – for steady nourishment
It’s light, mineral-rich, and deeply replenishing — exactly what the body craves as temperatures rise.

Simple. Seasonal. Healing.
Sometimes the best medicine is just fresh greens from the earth. 🌞
