Even in spring, Flu, RSV, and COVID are all circulating—and often start with the same symptoms: cough, fatigue, fever, and shortness of breath. That overlap makes it harder to distinguish between them, impacting diagnosis and treatment decisions.

Stories from patients and caregivers show how COPD influences daily routines, independence, emotional wellbeing, and family life. Despite how common and serious the disease is, it’s still often underdiagnosed or misunderstood, which can delay support and increase the burden on both patients and those caring for them.

These perspectives are a reminder that understanding respiratory disease requires more than clinic-based measurements. Recognizing how symptoms evolve day to day — and how they influence daily function — helps clinicians and researchers better assess disease burden, progression, and treatment response in ways that reflect patients’ lived experience.

A new paper in Nature Reviews Drug Discovery highlights what many of us have been working toward: a clear, quantified business case for the systematic adoption of digital endpoints in clinical trials.

The findings are compelling:
• Reduced trial timelines by 3–5 months
• Smaller study sizes
• Significant ROI — up to 14–22× in Phase III

Why Measure Cough and Lung Sounds in Respiratory Trials?

In our latest blog by Matthew McCarty, Chief Commercial Officer at Strados Labs, we explore how objective cough and lung sound monitoring can offer meaningful strategic value — even in indications beyond chronic cough.

When combined with traditional endpoints and patient-reported outcomes, these measures can strengthen label claims, help differentiate therapies in competitive markets, and provide a more complete view of treatment effect in daily life.

There’s also a growing financial case. Modeling studies suggest digital endpoints may improve measurement precision, reduce variability, and support stronger development decisions — with the potential to increase expected net present value and return on investment, particularly in later-stage trials.

What an energizing 2 days at BICC!

We were extremely proud to join the global community of clinicians, researchers, and industry leaders focused on finding solutions for the millions of people living with chronic cough.

Throughout the conference, it was clear that:
• Interest in objective, continuous cough monitoring continues to grow
• There is increasing focus on moving beyond frequency alone
• Digital endpoints are becoming a more important part of study design and decision-making

We’re excited to continue these conversations and build on the momentum coming out of BICC!

Personalized self-management is becoming an increasingly important part of chronic respiratory care.

Tailored action plans, patient education, and ongoing support can help patients recognize symptom changes earlier and respond before exacerbations worsen. When people have better visibility into how their condition shifts day to day, they’re more likely to stay engaged in care and maintain control over time. Still, access to consistent guidance and monitoring isn’t always equal, which can influence outcomes.

This growing focus on personalized management also reinforces the importance of understanding respiratory symptoms between clinic visits. Reliable insight into cough patterns and airway activity can help translate care plans into measurable trends — supporting earlier intervention, stronger clinical evaluation, and a clearer picture of disease impact outside the clinic.
