What is your relationship to uncertainty and not knowing?

Are you able to wade in the waters of “I don’t know what my next step is or I don’t know which paths to take between the two or wow, I feel so lost in life right now”?

What does it bring up?

Somatically, emotionally, and mentally?

What gives you faith to keep going?

Do you have practices that help you gain more clarity?

Or practices that help you stay with the unknown for longer?

I encourage you, the next time you feel the urge to know, to rush, or to control an outcome, see if you can catch the fear underneath. What are you scared of happening if you release control? Reflecting on this will teach you a lot about your inner world.

In this workshop, we will tune into a few things:
1. What faith (shraddha), Ishvara Pranidhana and Karma Yoga can teach us about aligning our actions with a higher source and learning to release control.
2. What sitting with uncertainty feels like in the body and nervous system.
3. What practices can help us find more clarity and connect our intuition. I believe there are answers waiting to be heard if we pay attention.

Join me for my upcoming in-person workshop on On Being With Uncertainty and Not Knowing SUNDAY OCTOBER 18 @ 2-4 PM at Light and Space Yoga in Echo Park 🐍

Wishing love, care, and power to all survivors 🐍❤️‍🔥🫂

May these simple practices be helpful in connecting you back to yourself.

Since the news about the Cornell rapists emerged, many women have come forward with their own stories of SA.

I feel the pit in my stomach, my heartbeat quickening, nausea setting in, and the heat of anger in my chest. The tightening of my jaw. The curling of my fists.

These violations should never have happened.

I feel repulsed.

Memories of my own SA resurface. Yoga practices, movement, plant medicine, and healing relationships with my partner, therapist, and yoga mentor helped me heal. Where I couldn’t form the words, I needed movement, breath, and nature to process them.

The practices I have shared have helped me return to the present moment, reconnect with my body, and tend to my feelings.

I dream of a world where we regard bodies as divine. Where we treat one another as sacred.

May we protect one another.

I love you dear one.

I’ve been thinking a lot about certainty vs uncertainty, knowing vs not knowing, building the capacity to be in the liminal space that perpetually reveals itself, and what a desire I have for having neat plans.

Just like many humans, I am not the biggest fan of not knowing and *think* I feel the best when I have a quarterly financial plan, a 3-year plan, or a 10-year goal. Nothing gets my anxiety going than *thinking* I need to have it all figured out. This restlessness brought me to Pema Chödrön’s book: Comfortable with Uncertainty.

She reminds us to stay present with what is, even when that feels uncertain or uncomfortable. To practice coming back to the reality of now, even when that now is complicated, uncertain, shaky, boring, imperfect, or messy.

Sometimes the most useful answer is, I don’t know yet.

“The root of suffering is resisting the certainty that no matter what the circumstances, uncertainty is all we truly have.”

Yoga offers us practices and inquiry not necessarily to eliminate the unknown, but to expand our capacity to remain present within it.

So what becomes possible when we stop treating uncertainty as a problem to solve and begin approaching it as a space for listening, discernment, and trust?

Through gentle asana, pranayama, meditation, yogic philosophy, journaling, and community reflection, we will explore how uncertainty lives in the body and practice tending to the discomfort it creates. Together, we will cultivate greater steadiness, spaciousness, and self-trust, even when clarity has not yet arrived.

Bring any lived experience you are working through and let’s see what arises.

Some things that brought me immense joy over the weekend:

1. One of my fave parts of festivals is women coming up to one another to express their admiration for each others dancing skills, beauty, adornment, vibes etc GODDESS do I love women ❤️‍🔥
2. Getting to adorn myself and dance with my beloveds is such a treat!!! May I never take this for granted. And may this joy fuel my purpose and service in this world.
3. My favorite dancing partner for the last 12 years 🥹
4. Spending quality time with my goddaughter (!!!) and besties. We all play so many different roles and have different identities in this world. Being a godmom is one of my absolute favorite roles I get to have 🫂
5. Being gifted four different types of feeders for my new obsession with birds 🐦 if you’re ever lucky enough (hehe) to get an invite to my house, you too will be blessed with the wonders of bird watching and be awed by that experience
6. Going into the rocky waters of ocean beach and feeling the power of Mother Earth and how prana animates all of life
7. Every time I am in SD, I always go to Robert’s 8 am class at South Park Yoga and Wellness. Functional, knowledgeable, kind, funny, and welcoming!
8. Kitty cat
9. What planning looked like for my Embodying Yamas and Niyamas workshop for the Tejal | Yoga online & LA • Mentoring • Social Justice activist sanctuary this past Friday. We explored the ascetic vs householder understanding and practice of these observances. I am so filled up by learning, teaching, and being around sincere students 😫😫

Another trip around the sun 🦁✨ Here are a few things the past year taught me:

Dance is medicine.
Your health is the foundation—tend to it.
Spend time in satsang and spiritual community.
Keep studying. Yoga means being a lifelong student.
Speak to your inner child and remind her: I’ve got you.
Find ways to connect with your culture.
Make space to grieve, even if only for a few moments each day.
Get into nature as often as you can. Speak to the trees.
Cooking is a love language.
Cats are life.
Let yourself dress funky and bold! This is the year of adornment for me.

Hold onto good people and let the others go. Some people will leave your life, and it might hurt—but that’s okay. Find your people and hold them close.

Speak up for what you care about, even if opportunities fall away. Anything that requires your silence was never meant for you.

Conflict is part of life. Get better at advocating for yourself—and at truly listening to others.

Your mind is sometimes lying to you and can be wildly off the mark.

Sometimes, I am the problem. 😅

Watching 100+ makeup tutorials will eventually pay off.

Most of all: self-love is the answer. The deeper I learn to love, trust, forgive, protect, and care for myself, the more fully I can meet this life.

Here’s to another year of becoming more fully myself. And another year full of gratitude to the people and communities in my life. I love you!❤️‍🔥

I believe that the practice of yoga is best shared one-on-one.

As it was traditionally taught: directly from one teacher to one student.

There is great importance in individualizing each yoga experience to meet the needs of the individual student.

I have worked one-on-one with several skillful and compassionate yoga teachers who transformed the way I move through the world - with more intention, awareness, and clarity.

And I am deeply grateful for the students and mentees I get to support. You know who you are!

Here are some love notes:

“Harpinder has a rare gift for gently guiding the subconscious into conscious awareness without force. Through our work together, I gained powerful new tools that help me access calm and spaciousness even through challenging periods, and underwent a profound shift in greater self-awareness and understanding of the energies in my body and what my body works to communicate to me.”

“Under Harpinder’s mentorship, I was able to transform my ways of thinking and seeing. Her teaching style is gentle, firm, and full of compassion. She allows you the space to make mistakes in your process while also holding you accountable. In my time with her, I was able to knock down years-old mental barriers that were holding me back from growth. I would recommend Harpinder to anyone looking to not only deepen their relationship with yoga, but with themselves as well. Plus, her commitment to educating and sharing authentic yoga rather than a watered-down westernized version is very special and very rare. She is the real deal.”

Especially as I train in and study yoga therapy (viniyoga), this one-on-one process is even more emphasized. Yoga practice and study is uniquely personal because are each unique and greatly supported by a mentor and ongoing learning.

So excited and full of gratitude to be returning to teach yoga at this year! ⚡️ ⚡

Lightning in a Bottle is one of my FAVORITE festivals and I’ve added some pictures from my years in attendance hehe, including when Ali proposed to me at LIB in 2023. The first few pictures is the yoga class I led at LIB last year.

I remember walking by the yoga area 11 (!!!) years ago thinking, wow I would love to teach yoga here someday.

I started going to festivals when I was 18 years old and these were one of the first places I experienced true freedom, liberation, ecstasy, and joy. Being able to express yourself however you want, dance however you want, and being in community with your chosen family.

This yoga class is going to be in homage to that liberation and freedom. In honor of yoga being a path of and to liberation.

Here’s my full LIB teaching line-up:

⚡ Fri 12:15 pm Liberating Yoga Flow with music by @ Yoga Sol
⚡️ Sat 10:00 am Loving Kindness Practice: Awakening the Heart @ Oracle Cauldron

Honored to be amongst other incredible teachers like and many more.

So looking forward to going with a CREW this year! Quality time with friends and loved ones nourishes me like nothing else.

And this is a reminder that you can be spiritual and throw it down!!! We are divine AND human my loves! Dancing connects me to the divine within.

Let me know if I’ll see you there in one of my classes or on the dance floor 🪩🌹🪷

Yoga is liberation and we need to practice its depths now more than ever.

For folks of the global majority, BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and those from marginalized communities: Yoga has always been a tool for survival, reclamation, and healing. This is your space to deepen without apology, honor yoga’s roots, and lead in a way that reflects your truth.

For allies and those with privilege: Yoga calls you to more than personal practice, it calls you to responsibility, integrity, and action. This is a space to unlearn, to listen, and to commit to honoring yoga’s depth in real ways.

My friend Susanna Barkataki is offering a powerful, online yoga training that embodies this purpose. I’ll be teaching a workshop inside Embody Yoga’s Roots YTT 300: Teaching Yoga with Integrity: Dismantling Appropriation and Honoring Yoga’s Roots.

This is more than just another training, this is a space where yoga is practiced as a tool for personal and collective change. Get more details and reserve your spot now. Sign up at the link in my bio.

For the last three months, I have been part of a West African dance team: Love Tribe! A powerful traditional Yoruba Style dance.

Led by the radiant, beautiful, and wise . I am so privileged to learn from you.

This past Saturday, we performed at the Ojai World Dance Festival.

This style of dance has felt so free and liberating in my body. Moving between fluidity to power to sensuality to energetic to calling upon Oshun.

Just three years ago, I could not learn choreography to save my life. As I share with my students:

One of my recent favorite definitions of Yoga comes from Desikachar in his book, The Heart of Yoga:

“Yoga is to attain what was previously unattainable. The starting point for this thought is that there is something that we are today unable to do; when we find the means for bringing that desire into action, that step is yoga. In fact, every change is yoga.”

I find this encouraging. Each step we take towards something that, at one point, seemed unattainable, with faith and trust, and surrender, is yoga.

Learning choreography and West African dance has been my yoga - it is what I have been linking to for my transformation.

I am curious - what have you been linking to—whether a practice, a way of being, or something new you are learning—for your transformation? Please let me know! I am hoping to use my IG more intentionally to build and deepen connections.
