For years, fentanyl has been the name tied to the overdose crisis. But the street drug supply keeps changing, and newer additives can be just as dangerous while being far less familiar: veterinary sedatives like xylazine and medetomidine, ultra-potent nitazenes, and industrial chemicals. Most can't be seen, smelled, or tasted.
What to know:
â˘Narcan (naloxone) won't reverse xylazine or medetomidine, but fentanyl is often mixed in, so use it in any suspected overdose. Nitazenes may take more than one dose.
â˘Don't use alone, and make sure the people around you know how to use naloxone.
â˘Test strips only detect one substance each: a fentanyl strip tests for fentanyl, not xylazine.
â˘Withdrawal gets more complicated when additives are involved, which is why medically managed detox matters.
In an emergency, call 911.
