🚨 MAMAS, NOT ALL CARTOONS ARE CREATED EQUAL! 🧠
Did you know some children’s shows change scenes every 2–3 SECONDS?!
Bright flashing colors, loud sounds, constant movement, and rapid scene changes can be a LOT for a developing nervous system.
A 2011 study published in Pediatrics found that just 9 MINUTES of fast-paced cartoons negatively affected young children’s performance on executive-function tasks compared to slower programming or drawing.
We’re talking about attention, impulse control, working memory, and self-regulation!
Other research has found increased physiological arousal, including elevated heart rate, while children watched fast-paced, violent cartoons.
This matters because our autonomic nervous system is responsible for regulating stress responses, including FIGHT OR FLIGHT.
🌿 HERE ARE SOME LOWER-STIMULATION SHOWS I LOVE:
🍃 Tumble Leaf (Amazon Prime) — Nature, curiosity, problem-solving
🐧 Puffin Rock — Nature, friendship, gentle storytelling
🐻 Little Bear — Imagination, family, emotional development
🌳 Franklin — Friendship, responsibility, life lessons
🚂 Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood — Emotional intelligence, kindness
🐭 Guess How Much I Love You — Nature, love, family connection
🦆 Sarah & Duck — Creativity, curiosity, gentle adventures
🐘 Stillwater — Mindfulness, patience, emotional regulation
🐯 Daniel Tiger — Feelings, routines, social skills
❤️ AND MAMAS, YOU DON’T HAVE TO TAKE THE SCREENS AWAY OVERNIGHT.
Start small. Replace one fast-paced show with something slower.
Give your child a heads-up before turning the TV off. Offer connection and an activity together instead of abruptly taking it away.
Let them get bored. Let them explore. Let them play outside, build forts, paint, and use their imagination.
We don’t have to entertain our children every waking moment.
Sometimes what their developing brains need most is LESS stimulation, not more.
