👶 Bringing home a new baby is an exciting, life-changing experience.

As you settle into your new routine, learning a few simple safe sleep habits can help reduce the risk of sleep-related infant deaths, including Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), and help you feel more confident caring for your little one.

đź’™ Have your baby sleep in their own crib or bassinet with a firm, flat mattress, rather than sharing an adult bed.
đź’™ Always place your baby on their back to sleep.
đź’™ Keep the sleep space free of pillows, loose blankets, toys and crib bumpers.

Small steps can make a big difference in helping your baby sleep safely.

👏👏 Congrats to Jonathan Hoffberger, DO, chief of cardiovascular surgery at SMH and cardiothoracic surgeon with First Physicians Group, who performed the world’s first heart procedure combining two new cardiac implants from Edwards Lifesciences in the same patient: the TRIFORMIS RESILIA tricuspid valve and ECLIPTIS Left Atrial Appendage (LAA) Exclusion System.

Dr. Hoffberger performed the milestone procedure alongside the multidisciplinary clinical teams at SMH-Sarasota. Cardiothoracic surgeons Jeffrey Sell, MD, FACS, and Kristen Walker, MD, with First Physicians Group, also performed ECLIPTIS procedures at SMH this month, becoming among the first wave in Florida to use this new technology.

We’re proud to continue bringing advanced cardiac care and leading-edge technologies to patients in our community!

🙌❤️ This week, interventional cardiologist Jeffrey Rossi, MD, and the clinical teams at Sarasota Memorial became the first in Southwest Florida to utilize Pi-Cardia’s ShortCut™ device, a groundbreaking leaflet modification technology designed to help enable valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) in patients at risk of coronary obstruction.

As bioprosthetic heart valves wear down over time, some patients may eventually need another valve. Valve-in-valve TAVR places a new valve inside the existing one; however, in some patients, the existing valve leaflets can block blood flow to the coronary arteries.

The ShortCut device is designed to split the existing valve leaflets before valve-in-valve TAVR, helping reduce the risk of coronary obstruction and expanding treatment options for certain patients.

đź’— aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women? In fact, about 1 in 3 new cancers diagnosed in women is breast cancer.

Early detection through annual screenings and mammograms can make all the difference. “When it’s discovered in the early stages, breast cancer can be highly treatable,” says Sarah Kimball, MD, FACS, breast surgical oncologist with Sarasota Memorial’s Brian D. Jellison Cancer Institute and First Physicians Group.

That’s why breast health self-care matters: Know your normal. Know your risk. Know when to get screened.
