Eating disorders don't have a "look." In fact, eating disorders effect people across body sizes, races, ethnicities, genders, ages, and economic backgrounds. A person may be seriously struggling even if their weight has not changed or others describe them as looking healthy.
We're sharing this information because today is National Eating Disorder Screening Day. It's a day to help remind people that struggling with food, body, and weight issues is common, and a screening is a good way to begin the recovery process.
Here are a few signs to look for:
Do you constantly worry about food, exercise, weight, or body shape?
Are you skipping meals or avoiding situations that involve food?
Do you create increasingly strict food or exercise rules for yourself?
Are you feeling ashamed or out of control around eating?
Do you avoid food because of its texture or fears of choking or vomiting?
Are you feeling weak, dizzy, cold, or unusually tired?
No single item on this list proves that someone has an eating disorder, and you also do not need to experience every sign. These are also a list of signs to watch for, and not a full screening. But it can be a handy tool for you to help you decide to seek care.
We are always available to discuss eating disorder signs, and treatment options. Our website offers many resources, and you are always invited to call us at (480) 451-8500.
