Years before I found the studie, I watched a brain-dead donor’s BIS / EEG monitor climb from under 10 into the 80s as the heart stopped. 80s is what we see when a patient emerges from anesthesia. I’m trained in science, and am still not sure what we saw.

The scan comes back normal, and somehow the problem becomes you.

A Mass General team scanned 125 people with chronic knee or back pain and looked somewhere interesting: the marrow inside the bones of the skull, which feeds immune cells into the tissue covering the brain. The immune signal there ran higher in patients than controls, and it rose with increasing pain intensity — most steeply in knee osteoarthritis.
