A Little Spooky, A Lot Delicious 👻

Our plant challenge may be over, but the fun with fruits and veggies continues! 🍌🫑🥕🍇

Halloween is a great excuse to play with your food. Think spooky snack boards, monster bites, and cozy pumpkin recipes. 🕸️🎃

Pick one idea to try with your family, bring to a party, or enjoy yourself. Your favorite Halloween candy can have a place at the table, too, of course! 🍬

Ready for a challenge? Try 30 plants this week. 🍊🫚🫘

Why? The American Gut Project found something interesting:
People who reported eating more than 30 different plant foods per week had greater gut microbial diversity than people who ate fewer than 10, even if they ate those 10 plants regularly throughout the week. 🍒🥒🍠

This means variety is key, try adding instead of restricting. ‼️

Different plants (not just vegetables!) provide different types of fiber, resistant starches, polyphenols, and other compounds that our gut microbes can use. 🦠

And remember, you don't have to become vegetarian or vegan to benefit from eating more plants. Your gut microbes will appreciate the variety, and supporting your gut is one more way we may support that ongoing conversation between the gut and the brain. 🧠🧡

Nutrition + Mental Health: The Takeaway 🌱🧠
Over this series, I’ve discussed a lot. But if there's one thing I hope you take away, it's this:

Your brain is part of your body—and how you nourish your body matters. 🥰
Remember that mental health is influenced by far more than food.
Nutrition isn't a replacement for therapy, medication, or appropriate mental health care. ❤️‍🩹

It's one part of caring for the whole person, and that’s what I hope to help all of you do! 🌻🫱🏽‍🫲🏻

Can a probiotic actually support your mood? 🤔
Psychobiotics are specific probiotics being studied for their potential effects on the gut-brain connection, stress, mood, anxiety, and depression. 🔬

While studies have found that certain probiotics may have modest benefits, not all probiotics are the same. 🙅🏻‍♀️ The benefits seen in research are often strain-specific. ✅

While these studies look promising, probiotics aren't a replacement for therapy, medication, nutrition, sleep, movement, or other appropriate mental health care. They're one potential piece of a much bigger puzzle. 🧩

Thinking about trying a probiotic for gut or mental health? 🙋🏽‍♀️
Don't choose one based on the claims on the front of the bottle.❗️
I can help you look at the research, your health history, your symptoms, and the specific strains in a product to determine whether a probiotic makes sense for you. 🙌🏼

What does a mental-health-supportive plate actually look like? 👀

There's no single food that prevents depression or "boosts" your mental health. 🫣

But research in nutritional psychiatry suggests that the overall pattern of what we eat matters. 👏🏼

So what might that look like on your plate? 🍽️
Check out the graphic above for some inspo. 👆🏼💛

What does your gut have to do with your mental health? 🔍

We know your gut and brain are constantly communicating. But here's where it gets really interesting:

Human studies have found differences in the gut microbiomes of people with major depression compared with people without depression. 🤯

Does this mean changing your microbiome can cure depression or anxiety?
No. ❌

We're still learning which microbiome changes are causes, consequences, or simply associated with mental health conditions. 🧐

Nutrition isn't a cure for mental illness, but nourishing the body may be one meaningful piece of supporting mental health. 🧘🏻‍♀️❣️

Your gut and your brain are talking. 🗣️
All day. Every day. ♾️
So how does your gut communicate with your brain? 👇🏼

🦠Your gut microbes produce metabolites.
🦠Your immune system gets involved.
🦠Your nervous system connects the two.
🦠And it works both ways.

Your gut and brain aren't separate systems. They're in constant conversation. 🧬💬🧠

What might that conversation mean for our mental health? 🌱
That’s next weeks post. ⏰

Nutrition for your Mental Health: What should you put on your plate? 🍽️

Your brain and your gut are in constant communication.
And one of the ways we can support that connection might be simpler than you thought: Feed your gut microbes well. 🦠

So what does that look like on your plate?
Lots of different plants 🫘🍊🍆🥝
Eat the rainbow 🍎🥕🍌🫑🫐
Include fermented foods 🥛🫙🥒
Choose brain-supportive fats 🌰🥜
Make ultra-processed foods a smaller part of your overall intake 🍩🍔🍟
The takeaway?
When we're talking about nutrition and mental health, we're not looking for one magical "brain food." Instead, we're looking at the overall dietary pattern and feeding the trillions of microbes that help connect the gut and brain.

Start simple: What is one more plant food you could add to your plate today? 🌱

Next up: Why does feeding your gut matter to your brain? 🧠
