Dear soul friends,
Every day we hear stories from people with broken hearts - deaths of loved ones, divorces, estranged family relationships, losses of physical abilities, end-of-life worries, financial strains, distress about the state of our country, sorrow for people in war zones, anxiety about our hurting planet - so many things grieve our hearts.
In the ancient Sumerian myth of Inana, the Queen of Heaven and Earth hears the groans of her sister and is drawn to go to the Underworld. Knowing that Ereshkigal, Queen of the Underworld, does not allow people to return, Inana asks her friends to keep watch and help her return from the underworld.
In her descent, Inana passes through seven gates, stripping away part of her identity at each threshold. Finally, Inana stands before her sister Ereshkigal who lashes out and kills her, then she laments with great suffering. Inana’s friends immediately descend to help Inana and they find Ereshkigal in the agonies of grief.
Ereshkigal wails “Oh oh my insides!” and they respond, “Oh oh your insides!”
Ereshkigal moans “Oh oh my outsides!” and they respond “Oh oh your outsides.”
“Oh oh my heart!” …. “Oh oh your heart!”
“Oh oh my belly!” … “Oh oh your belly!”
The cries of pain and compassionate mirroring continue and include many body parts. Grief touches all aspects of our beings. Finally Ereshkigal’s cries cease, stunned into quiet by the gift of someone witnessing her pain.
In gratitude, Ereshkigal grants the wish of Inana’s friends and allows her to return from the Underworld.
In my own journeys with grief, I have been transformed by the alchemy of sharing my sorrows and feeling them lovingly held and witnessed. Especially following the death of my brother, the leaders and guests on our grief retreat accompanied my descent into the underworld and tended my heart until I was ready to begin my ascent.
If this story resonates with you, I hope you will gift yourself with the experience of one of our upcoming grief retreats. I have felt this truth deep in my bones - “the only way out is through” - and we would be honored to bear witness to your grieving.
With abundant blessings,
Libby
