Paws for Purple Hearts Seattle Tacoma

These service dogs will serve their Warrior owners for the rest of their careers.

We improve the lives of America’s Warriors facing mobility challenges and trauma-related conditions such as PTSD and TBI by providing the highest quality assistance dogs and canine-assisted therapeutic programs. Under the guidance of PPH instructors and partner organization healthcare professionals, Warriors (Active Duty Service Members or Veterans) with PTSD and TBI engage with specially-bred Golden and Labrador Retriever puppies during therapeutic sessions that help them overcome their symptoms and reintegrate into civilian life. They help the dogs learn more than 110 commands so that when they graduate as full-fledged service dogs they can be given to Warriors who have sustained mobility-limiting injuries and/or PTSD.

Through our CAWT® program, Veterans and active-duty service members work alongside our trainers and dogs in training, building meaningful connections and a sense of purpose while helping prepare future Service Dogs.

Whidbey’s first pumpkin patch visit 🎃👻

Why do we take trips like this? We take our dogs in training on “field trips” to expose them to all types of environments, smells, and distractions. The goal is to have them remain calm and focused on their handler no matter where they are or the things going on around them. Ideally, with enough practice they do this with ease and no longer struggle with distractions.

For someone living with PTSD, a nightmare can feel incredibly real.

A trained Paws for Purple Hearts Service Dog can interrupt the nightmare by providing deep pressure therapy, using their body as a weighted blanket to offer comfort, grounding, and support. There are many ways to interrupt a nightmare or anxiety attack, this is just one of the many ways our dogs intervene. 🐾💜
