BVGH invites you to attend the BVGH & SIOP Africa African Pediatric Oncology Exchange (APEX) discussion series, which will launch on October 28, 2026. This monthly virtual case-based learning series will connect pediatric oncology clinicians across Africa and beyond. APEX will provide a forum for clinicians to share experiences, discuss approaches to childhood cancer care, and explore lessons learned from diverse settings. Discussions will alternate each month between hematologic malignancies and solid tumors to facilitate learning across a broad range of pediatric cancers. Registrants will be invited to submit retrospective, de-identified patient cases for discussion at an upcoming meeting.

Enrollment in high-quality clinical trials is critical for ensuring that medicines, technologies, and practices are safe and effective in all patient populations – and yet African patients are severely underrepresented in clinical trials.

BVGH President and CEO Jennifer Dent spoke on a panel at the World Health Summit on the topic of creating equity in clinical trials. BVGH, in collaboration with Medicaid Cancer Foundation (MCF), recently held two childhood cancer awareness events for children and caregivers in Abuja, focused on recognizing common childhood cancer symptoms and the importance of seeking care early. A highlight of the events was The Guardians, a comic book originally developed for Malawi by the Burkitt’s Lymphoma Fund for Africa. BVGH and MCF adapted the story for the Nigerian context and translated it to Hausa and Pidgin English.

The Guardians follows Samuel, a young child who discovers a lump on his stomach, leading to a cancer diagnosis and treatment. Through read-aloud story sessions, children and caregivers learned about when to seek care and why early diagnosis matters. Copies of the adapted comic were distributed to children during the events for them to share with their families.

Early diagnosis and access to treatment are critical to better outcomes. Engaging and locally relevant stories like The Guardians help raise awareness of common cancer symptoms, teach families where to access care, and foster hope that childhood cancer is treatable!

Surgical intervention remains a cornerstone of oncology, but general surgeons often perform complex cancer operations without the benefit of formal, tumor-specific residencies or fellowships, highlighting a critical need for accessible professional development.

To bridge this divide, BVGH led the AAI Cancer Surgery (French) digital series, tailoring the curriculum to the needs of Francophone surgeons managing various cancer patients. The 11-session program gathered 714 healthcare professionals from 37 countries, and featured expert insights on specialty surgeries alongside sessions on interventional radiology and embolization techniques. Post-course evaluations indicated that 94% of participants gained stronger proficiency in surgery topics – illustrating the impact of digital education in enhancing capacity and patient outcomes across the region.
