❤️ Ultrasound Awareness Month: Evaluating Heart Function

One of the most important questions cardiac ultrasound can help answer is: How well is the heart pumping?

Cardiac sonographers use multiple techniques to evaluate ventricular function, including visual assessment and quantitative measurements such as ejection fraction.

Students learn that evaluating heart function involves much more than obtaining a single number. Chamber size, wall motion, cardiac remodeling, and the overall clinical picture all contribute to understanding cardiac performance.

🫀 It’s where anatomy, physiology, imaging, and critical thinking come together.

🧠📌 Making It Stick!

Coronary angiographic views can take a little practice to master, so our junior Cardiovascular Technology students were challenged to get creative!

For their “Make It Stick” presentations, students developed their own memory tricks for the major coronary angiographic views, connecting C-arm positioning, angulation, coronary anatomy, and what each view demonstrates.

Then came the real test—they had to teach their memory trick to the class! From creative phrases to visual cues, each presentation offered a different way to make those tricky views a little easier to remember.

Because sometimes the best way to remember RAO, LAO, cranial, and caudal is to make it memorable! 🧠🫀

No sticky notes required…just a few creative ways to keep those coronary views straight! 📌😉

🌊 Ultrasound Awareness Month: Doppler Echocardiography

Cardiac ultrasound doesn’t just let us see the heart….it can help us evaluate blood flow too.

Using Doppler techniques, cardiac sonographers can assess the direction and velocity of blood moving through the heart.

🫀 Doppler echocardiography can help evaluate:
• Blood flow across heart valves
• Valve stenosis and regurgitation
• Intracardiac pressures and pressure gradients
• Hemodynamic changes within the heart

Our CVT students learn to combine cardiac anatomy, ultrasound physics, and Doppler measurements to understand not only what the heart looks like, but how it is functioning.

🩺 Learning From the Pros!

Our junior Cardiovascular Technology students traded the lecture notes for some hands-on learning! Students gained experience with some of the essential skills used in the cardiac cath lab, including sterile field preparation, aseptic technique, and IV cannulation.

A special thank you to OLHS Nurse Educators Cerra Wilson, RN and Kari Davis, RN for sharing their expertise, demonstrating proper technique, and guiding our students through these important patient-care skills.

Learning from experienced healthcare professionals gives our students the opportunity to build their skills while reinforcing the importance of patient safety, precision, and teamwork in the cath lab. ❤️

When it comes to the cath lab, we have to disagree with TLC…we definitely want scrubs! 😉🧼💉

🫀 Left Heart Cath: From Lecture to Real Life!

There’s nothing like hearing about the cath lab from someone who experiences it from the physician side of the table!

Cardiology Fellow Dr. Babbili, MD stopped by to share a physician’s perspective on left heart catheterization and coronary angiography. This talk helped bring the concepts our junior CVT students have been studying to life.

Thank you, Dr. Babbili for sharing your time and knowledge with our students!

🫀 October is Medical Ultrasound Awareness Month!

All month long, we’re highlighting some of the technology and techniques used in cardiac ultrasound (echocardiography).

🔹 This week: 2D Echocardiography

2D echo provides real-time images of the heart, allowing cardiac sonographers to evaluate the heart’s chambers, valves, walls, and overall function.

But getting a diagnostic image takes more than placing a transducer on the chest. Sonographers use multiple imaging windows, precise transducer movements, and knowledge of cardiac anatomy to capture the views needed for a complete study.

📚 Our Cardiovascular Technology students learn these foundational skills before applying them to increasingly complex cardiac pathology.

You could say our students are learning to look at the heart from every angle. 😉

Stay tuned each week as we spotlight another cardiac ultrasound technique!

🎉 BIG NEWS FOR LSU HEALTH SHREVEPORT'S CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM! 🎉

🫀 Our hearts are full, and now officially accredited! 🫀

We are proud to announce that the Cardiac Sonography concentration of our Bachelor of Science in Cardiovascular Technology program is now CAAHEP accredited!!!

This milestone reflects the hard work and dedication of our faculty, students, administration, clinical partners, medical leadership, and everyone who supported the program throughout the accreditation process.

CAAHEP accreditation represents our commitment to providing students with a high-quality education that meets nationally recognized standards and prepares graduates for careers in adult cardiac sonography.

Our students continue to benefit from the unique structure of our program:
🫀 One bachelor’s degree
🩺 Training in cardiac sonography and invasive cardiovascular technology
🎓 Preparation for professional credentialing and careers in cardiovascular care

It’s a milestone that really gets our hearts pumping! ❤️

We are incredibly proud of how far our program has come and excited about where we are headed next!

Ready to follow your heart into a career in cardiovascular care?
Applications are now open for our cohort. Application deadline is February 15.

❤️ Learning From the Field!

Our junior Cardiovascular Technology students had the opportunity to learn about clinical hemodynamics from our program’s Medical Director and interventional cardiologist, Dr. George Mina, MD, PhD, FACC, FSCAI. 🫀📈

Students explored how pressure measurements, waveforms, and hemodynamic data are used in the cardiac cath lab. With clinical rotations beginning in just a few short weeks, the timing couldn’t be better!

Experiences like this give our students the opportunity to learn directly from cardiovascular professionals and gain valuable clinical perspective.

We appreciate him taking the time to share his knowledge and help prepare our students for the next step in their training! ❤️

🫀 Practice Makes Perfect!

Our senior Cardiovascular Technology students are sharpening their echocardiography skills using our state-of-the-art echo simulator! 🫀🖥️

The simulator allows students to practice obtaining cardiac views, making measurements, optimizing images, and identifying anatomy in a realistic, hands-on environment.

And they’re not stopping with normal anatomy—cardiac pathology is next! Students can use the simulator to encounter abnormal findings and practice recognizing what happens when the heart doesn’t quite follow the textbook. ❤️🔍

Can you see yourself doing this? If you’re interested in healthcare, technology, and hands-on patient care, Cardiovascular Technology could put you right at the heart of it all.

📣 Applications are OPEN!
Ready to take the first step toward a career in cardiovascular care? Apply by February 15! ❤️
