The label on a supplement bottle is a general recommendation for a general person. It is not a prescription, and it was not written for your nervous system.

This comes up constantly, and a patient said it on the podcast better than I could: she told us flatly when something was not working for her, and because she said so, we adjusted it until it was hers.

That is how this is supposed to go, and it is worth saying plainly.

Two things drive it. First, the amount you take in is not the amount you absorb. Absorption varies with gut function, with what else is on board, with timing around food, and with the form the nutrient comes in. Second, the same dose can land completely differently depending on how your system is currently running. When the brain is imbalanced and you simply add more fuel, it does not resolve the compensation. It can amplify it.

So the plan is a starting point, not an answer. We watch what it actually does, and we change it.

Which means the most useful thing a patient can do is tell us the truth early. Not after three months of pushing through. Early.

Eat real foods. Foods that God made. Healthy meats, and enough of it. Then adjust the rest based on what your body actually reports back.

If you are taking things and not sure any of it is doing anything, let us look.

Chronic pain is often not a nerve problem. It is a communication problem.

When someone has lived with pain long enough, the options they get handed start to sound permanent. Cut the nerves. Put in an implant. A lot of the patients we see at Brain Health and Chiropractic have been offered exactly that, and I understand why it starts to sound reasonable. You get desperate.

But in functional neurology, we look at it differently. Most of these cases are a communication problem between the brain and the body.

If you cut off the nerves, you are getting rid of the source. You are not getting rid of the problem.

Here is why. Pain is perception. The signal comes up from the arm or the back or the leg, but it is in the brain where we make sense of it. The brain decides how loud that signal is, whether to turn it down, and whether it is even the right signal for what is happening.

With a condition like CRPS, the brain has lost track of where that part of the body is in space. It cannot modulate the pain cycles running through it the way it should. So the signal keeps coming, and nothing upstream turns it down.

That changes the question. Instead of asking how to shut the signal off, we ask how well the brain is processing it, and we measure that.

If you have been told the only options left are permanent, start with a Free 15-minute Discovery Call · (605) 799-7579.

Sprain your ankle in a game and everybody agrees you need rehab. Nobody thinks about rehabbing a brain.

That gap is most of why concussion histories stack up quietly for years.

An ankle hurts, visibly, in one place, and the rehab is obvious. A brain injury often does not hurt at all after the first week. The symptoms show up as fog, irritability, poor sleep, motion sensitivity, worse balance in the dark, or getting overwhelmed in a grocery store. None of those announce themselves as an injury, so nobody rehabs anything. The system compensates instead, and it gets good at compensating.

Then the next one lands on top of a system that is already working around the last one. It does not have to be a big hit. A fall, a rear-end collision, a hard landing on a horse, years of small ones in a sport. What matters is the stack, not any single event.

This is also why people cannot name the moment it started. There often is not one. There is a slow narrowing of what feels comfortable until somebody notices they have stopped doing things.

Intensity creates change. That is not a theory, that is neuroscience, and it is the reason we rehab a brain the way we would rehab any other system: measure it, load it specifically, measure it again.

If you have a history of hits nobody ever rehabbed, it is worth measuring.

When people say dizzy, they usually mean the room is spinning. That is one kind. It is not the most common kind.

A patient described her childhood version of it on the podcast, and it is worth hearing in her words. Motion sickness and the world's worst hangover at the same time. Lying in bed while the room keeps moving. Feeling wobbly on dry land, like having sea legs all the time.

That is not spinning. That is the sense of being in motion when nothing is moving, and it points somewhere different than vertigo does.

Spinning usually points at the inner ear. The boat feeling usually points at how the brain integrates eyes, inner ear and body position together, which is a timing problem more than a hardware problem. Lightheaded on standing points at blood pressure and the autonomic system. Out-of-body and untethered points somewhere else again.

Each one gets a different exam, so the first thing we do is ask which kind. Then we measure it: eye movement, balance, reaction time, what happens when you stand up.

If your dizziness has never fit the word, that is information. Bring it.

Passing out is not something to file away as one of those things.

We hear a version of this often. Somebody went down. They got checked, the heart looked fine, the labs looked fine, and they were sent home with dehydration or stress written on the visit summary. Then it happened again.

Here is what is worth understanding. Fainting is usually a blood pressure and heart rate coordination problem, not a heart problem. The heart can be perfectly healthy while the system that tells it what to do on standing is mistimed. That is why the cardiac workup comes back clean and the fainting continues. Both things are true at once.

And there is almost always a runway before the event. Heat intolerance. Feeling worse in the shower. Needing to sit down in a checkout line. Brain fog that gets worse the longer you are upright. Standing still being harder than walking. People do not report any of that, because on its own none of it sounds like anything.

So we ask about all of it directly, and then we measure the response to position change instead of asking anyone to describe it.

Nobody had measured the right thing yet is the most common finding in this office, and it is the most fixable one.

If you have gone down more than once and been told it was nothing, get the autonomic side measured.

Your eyes can drift in the dark without you ever knowing.

One of the tests we run at Brain Health and Chiropractic is a VNG. We put goggles on that let us watch your eyes in complete darkness. In this patient's case, when the light went away, her eyes were not steady. They drifted, and she had no idea it was happening.

In normal light you would never see it. Your visual system locks onto something in the room and the drift disappears. Take the light away and what is underneath shows up.

Here is why that matters for brain fog. If your eyes are constantly moving, your brain thinks you are moving. All day. Sitting at a desk, standing in a kitchen, driving to work. Your brain spends energy trying to compensate and hold you steady against motion that is not really there.

It is hard to feel rested when your brain is working that hard just to stay steady. It is hard to modulate pain, too.

So when someone tells me they feel foggy, drained, or like they had a few drinks when they have not, I do not take that as vague. I take it as something to measure. Getting through the eye tracking test is often a finding by itself.

This is what we mean by bringing objectivity to subjectivity. Your symptoms are real either way. A symptom you can measure is one you can track.

A patient said something on the podcast that we want to repeat, because she said it better than we could.

By the time you have been to all those doctors, you have already spent a lot.

Deductibles. Imaging. Specialists in other cities. Supplements bought on a hunch. The cost of not having an answer adds up for years, and it rarely shows up on one bill, so nobody counts it.

Her advice was to stop spreading it thin. Do the full evaluation once, get the actual measurements, and know what you are dealing with.

The other thing she said matters just as much. Do not overhaul everything at once. Nobody sustains a cold-turkey diet change and a new routine and a new mindset in the same week. Small things, done consistently, are what hold.

That is how we run care here. Measure first, so the plan is specific. Then change one thing at a time, so it sticks.

If you have spent years and money chasing an answer, a 15-minute call costs nothing and tells you whether this is the right place to look.

The goggles are the part people remember, and they are worth explaining.

Your eyes are the most honest reporter your brain has. Every balance system you own routes through eye movement. The inner ear stabilizes your gaze when your head turns. The cerebellum fine tunes it. The brainstem times it. When any of that is off, the eyes drift, overshoot, stutter or correct in a pattern.

You cannot see that pattern in a lit room, because the moment a patient has something to look at, the brain locks onto it and covers the drift up. Vision is that dominant. It papers over the problem.

So we take vision away. Infrared cameras in the dark, recording the eyes at high speed while there is nothing to fixate on. The compensation drops away and what is actually happening underneath becomes visible and recordable.

Then we move the head, change the position, and watch what the system does under load.

This is what bringing objectivity to subjectivity looks like in practice. A patient says the room moves when she rolls over in bed. We do not just believe her or doubt her. We record it, we see which direction the eyes go, and that direction tells us which structure is involved.

Same exam process for every case that comes through the door, whether it is dizziness, a concussion history, or fog nobody can explain.

Head pressure. Brain fog. Chronic dizziness. Post-concussion symptoms. Dysautonomia and POTS.

Patients come to us after being told everything looks normal. Often the problem is not damage. It is how the brain is processing and responding to the information it receives.

The Brain Reset Program with Dr. Cooper Dykstra was built for complex cases. The 2-minute quiz is the first step.

A patient told us she could not read a book anymore. Not would not. Could not. The words would not hold still.

That is not a vague complaint. It is a specific finding, and it points somewhere.

Reading is one of the most demanding visual tasks you do, and almost nobody thinks of it that way. Your eyes make dozens of small, precise, coordinated jumps across a line of text, then snap back and land in exactly the right spot to start the next line. That is fine motor control happening far below your awareness, thousands of times an hour.

If the two eyes are not aiming at the same point, your brain receives two slightly different images and has to reconcile them on every single jump. That is expensive. It shows up as words swimming, losing your place, reading the same paragraph three times, or a headache behind the eyes after ten minutes.

People blame the prescription. Or their focus. Or their age.

It is often none of those. It is aiming and timing, which is a different question than clarity, and a standard eye exam was not built to answer it.

So we measure eye movement directly. Where they aim, how fast they get there, whether they arrive together, and what happens when the target moves.

If reading has quietly become work, that is measurable and worth measuring.
