12-year-old Rahemeen's life has been transformed by gene therapy - she no longer needs regular blood transfusions for her severe beta thalassemia and has the energy to finally go bike riding!

Our hospital was a leading study site for the brand-new gene therapy treatment for transfusion-dependent beta thalassemia. After years of clinical trials conducted at our hospital and other sites, in 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the treatment. We were the first Qualified Treatment Center offering the therapy, and Rahemeen was the first patient outside a clinical trial to receive it.

As many dancers know, starting pointe before you are physically ready can lead to major injuries, which is why we’re committed to helping dancers stay strong, healthy, and supported both on and off-stage. Physical therapists from our Sports Medicine and Performance Center recently visited Twirl to assess young dancers’ readiness to advance their training to the next level. These one-on-one evaluations from our experts look at strength, flexibility, balance, and neuromuscular control all while making sure these young dancers can advance safely while staying on “Pointe.”
