The calm after a sauna may come with measurable cardiovascular changes.
In an experimental study of 102 adults with at least one cardiovascular risk factor, participants completed a 30-minute sauna session.
Average blood pressure decreased from 137/82 mmHg before the sauna to 130/75 mmHg immediately afterward. Systolic blood pressure also remained below baseline after a 30-minute recovery period.
This doesn’t mean sauna should be used as a treatment for high blood pressure. Instead, it shows one of the short-term cardiovascular responses researchers have observed following heat exposure.
Thirty minutes of heat. Effects that may continue after you step out.
