Do you know what these small, transparent, round objects are?
In this video, you are seeing zebrafish embryos about 1 day after fertilization (1 dpf). Although zebrafish look like small, ordinary fish, they are extremely important in modern biomedical research.
Why do scientists use zebrafish?
1. Transparent embryos
Zebrafish embryos are almost completely transparent. This allows scientists to directly observe how the brain, heart, nervous system, and body structures developâwithout any surgery.
2. Very rapid development
Within just 24â48 hours, the heartbeat, blood circulation, and nervous system become clearly visible. What takes weeks in humans can be observed within just a few days in zebrafish.
3. Genetic similarity to humans
About 70% of human disease-related genes have counterparts in zebrafish. Because of this, zebrafish are widely used to study cancer, neurological disorders, heart diseases, congenital defects, and many other conditions.
What are you seeing in this video?
You are looking at 1-day-old zebrafish embryos placed in a Petri dish (a type of round laboratory plate), where the basic body plan of the future fish has already started to form. This video was recorded using a mobile phone camera.
A small fish, but a huge contribution to science. Big discoveries donât always require big animals!
