$400 will fund one day of cancer research
$2,500 will fund a week of research
$10,000 covers costs for a month of research
Researchers Work Together to Study Canines for Clues About Cancer’s Side Effects
According to Dr. Vicky Yang, veterinary cardiologist at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts – these same drugs are known to cause similar damage in canine patients. This had led to the rise of a fairly new field of medicine known as “Cardio-oncology,” and experts such as Dr. Iris Jaffe, Executive Director of the Molecular Cardiology Research Institute at Tufts, believe more can be done to prevent cardiovascular disease in both humans and canines.

We fund maximum impact research and clinical trials in comparative oncology and translational pediatric cancer research. We seek to bring canine cancer patients new, humane treatments for their cancers, while answering key questions for kids with cancer, including the fundamental biology of cancer development, metastasis, and recurrence; tumor genetics; genomics; molecular targets and signaling pathways; therapeutic responses and toxicities.

The Canines-N-Kids Foundation is about raising awareness of the cancers kids and our beloved canines share in common, and closing the funding gap that has stood in the way of making meaningful progress. We are about collaboration and breaking down barriers that stand in the way of a breakthrough in canine and pediatric cancer. Our goal is to bring together the best and brightest in pediatric and veterinary oncology, and to work creatively and constructively with others who share in our mission to help canines and kids with cancer to beat their disease.

CNK would like to thank Ketterman's Jewelers for their generosity in making Canines-N-Kids Foundation their charity for #FirstFriday in February (appropriate because it is the month of love) again for the second year! This year, even in a pandemic, they raised an incredibly generous amount in only one day!
Thanks Ketterman's!

Just as in children, dogs spontaneously develop a range of cancers, many of them the same or similar. Pet dogs are seen as an important model for studying and treating human disease because they are live in our midst- they experience the same complicated biological, environmental, nutritional and other factors that may lead to the development of cancerous tumors as well as metastases and recurrence. Pet dogs, like humans, develop cancer despite have a functioning immune system (the cancer evades the body’s immune surveillance). And, particularly relevant for kids, a dog’s size provides a much better approximation for evaluating the dosing and effect of new cancer medicines in children than traditional mouse models do. These important connections between canines and kids afflicted with cancer can help us to find answers, and one day a cure for both.

Kudos, Bark Magazine! Thank you for spreading the word about canine cancer.
A lump, a limp, a loss of appetite. Notice one of these in your dog and your first thought is likely to be, “Huh. Wonder what’s causing that?” Your second thought may be, “Could it be cancer?”
Cancer is complex, and many of the answers to today's questions will come from the next generation of medical researchers veterinary oncologists, immunologists and genomics experts. But often, these students cannot afford to pursue extensive extra study in specialty fields like comparative oncology CNK's grants are aimed at enabling them to do so.

Dogs play with us in our yards, sleep and live in our homes, breathe the same air and eat many of the same foods. They are exposed to the same complex biological, nutritional and environmental factors that can affect our health. In fact, the genome of the dog is 84% similar to that of people. Not surprisingly, we develop many of the same diseases, including cancer.
There are several cancers that develop spontaneously both in dogs and kids including:
-bone cancer
-certain brain/central nervous system cancers (e.g. glioma, glioblastoma)
-lymph and blood cancers
And these are often different from cancers in adult humans. How these cancers develop, “behave” and progress, and even the side effects kids and canines experience from treatment, are very similar.

In this article I discuss how dogs can help find better treatments for childhood cancer.
Certain dogs may be more susceptible than others to developing environmentally associated cancers. Knowing this may allow vets to create unique health plans for dogs to help prevent them from getting cancer

We will operate with a sense of positive urgency to ensure the development of therapies that will help canines and kids who are diagnosed with cancer, not only to help them beat their disease, but to address recurrence and live a better life during and after treatment. We will not stop until we find a cure, and we will get there…together.

We work tirelessly every day with one urgent goal in mind: to accelerate breakthrough treatments for canine cancer patients that are humane, provide or improve quality of life, and ultimately benefit them in their battle against cancer. At the same time, we want to maximize the translational value of our work in canines for the benefit of pediatric cancer patients - to speed the onset of clinical trials that will ultimately help kids beat their cancer too.

Imagine being 13 and hearing from your mom the life-changing words “you have cancer.” Ethan, who loves baseball and acting, is today a Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research Ambassador and shared his incredible story at the Canines-N-Kids Foundation 2020 Paws for a Cure Research Symposium. Now 15 years old and in high school, Ethan finished his grueling treatment course for B-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma this past July after 1220 days.
Thank you Ethan - we are so proud of you - you are truly brave. You inspire us to work together for a day when there is no more cancer for either children or our canine best friends- to Crush Cancer at Both Ends of the Leash!

Going through cancer treatment is hard enough for pediatric cancer patients and their families during normal times – but imagine receiving treatment during COVID-19.
Isolation, fear and dampened spirits are impacting thousands of children in oncology wards across the United States today.
Because of social distancing, there are stricter limits on visits from family and friends; fewer special programs for sick children are operating, and visits from beloved therapy dogs are not yet allowed in many hospitals. However, the Canine-N-Kids Foundation (CNK) has been offering a bright light to these children, in the form of special care packages provided by its Project Hearts & Tails initiative.
Project Hearts & Tails works directly with hospitals to provide support packages meant to bring comfort and hope to young cancer patients. Within each package is a copy of a beautiful children’s book written by Canines-N-Kids’ founder Ulrike Szalay, called “We’ll Get Through This Together,” as well as a black Labrador plush friend. Soon, the kits will include a red hat from the Black Dog company, and a t-shirt. The packages are designed to help Certified Child Life Specialists at the hospitals talk with sick children about the emotions they are facing.
If you would like to make a $30 donation to send a Project Hearts & Tails care package to a pediatric cancer patient – please click here: https://caninesnkids.org/project-hearts-and--tails.html
We will target and fund projects that have transformative potential in the field of comparative oncology and pediatric cancer research.

Kids and canines are connected by a harsh reality...few medicines for their cancers exist and virtually no investment is being made in a cure for their cancers.
* 1 in 5 children will die from cancer
* Merely 4% of NIH budget, and near 0 pharma money goes into new cancer drugs for kids.
* Limited treatment options for canines with cancer.
* 50% of all dogs over 10 will die from cancer.
Canines-N-Kids exists to change this reality. To raise awareness, raise funds, and put an end to cancer.

”Brave” doesn’t begin to describe what childhood cancer patients and their families endure every day of their battle,” said Ulrike Szalay, Founder and Executive Director of the Canines-N-Kids Foundation. “. What they are going through is not something anyone should have to face, and it is exacerbated by the COVID crisis. Project Hearts & Tails is our small way of bringing comfort, love and hope if we can, while we work toward a world where there is no more cancer.”’

Dogs have a higher incidence of cancer than humans/kids overall. Some pediatric cancers are rare and therefore difficult to study, but are much more common in canines. For example, osteosarcoma strikes about 25,000 dogs in the US a year, but is an orphan disease in kids (about 800 cases/year). Treating and studying canine patients with this disease will help bring new, humane treatments to them, while also helping doctors learn more about this devastating cancer for the benefit of kids with osteosarcoma.
These two incredible and precious patient populations may be best suited to help one another to find a better bath forward, and one day put an end to cancer!
