👉🏼Episode 4: Out now. ChatGPT will talk to you all night but it can’t meet you for a margarita or notice you’ve been wearing the same leggings for the past 4 days and need to get out.
•
As we continue our conversation we discuss just that.
It’s all too easy to self-isolate when your phone gives you somewhere to go without actually going anywhere. Especially when you’ve moved to a new place and putting yourself out there takes more energy than you feel like giving.
•
It takes bravery to ask someone new to coffee and admit you could use the company.
There are consequences when we keep opting out. People have fewer chances to know us or notice when we’re struggling, and the longer we stay home the bigger an undertaking walking out the door can become.
•
You can love your own company and still need someone to text, “Come on. We’re going.”
A little from our Soul Harbor conversation in Montana.
•
And perhaps, forward this to that accidental friend you didn’t know you very much needed when you first met. 🫶🏼

👉🏼Wife and mom can be huge parts of who you are. They don’t have to be all of who you are.
•
Nicole talks about making room for the other parts too, in whatever way actually fits your life right now.
A career. A hobby. Something that’s yours. Even ten quiet minutes in the bathtub.
•
Identity doesn’t have to mean reinventing yourself. Sometimes it’s just remembering you’re still in there.
Pass this on to a friend who needs this message right now 👉🏼

🇺🇸 A different kind of labor.**

They were out in theater. We were home handling all the decisions and absurdities of regular life without them.

And what were they going to do from a war zone anyway? Telling them would only give them one more thing they couldn’t fix. God forbid they were over there thinking we were back home suffering.

We’re grown-ass women. We can handle the thing.

So we handled the thing.

Whatever the thing was.

Their labor was war. Ours was keeping life moving back home.

It was beyond hard sometimes. But it was what it was. And we got very good at it. 💪🏼

**What did you learn to handle without them?**

👉🏼Is it possible for us to stop keeping score in our marriages? To make things a little less transactional and perhaps a little less “ I’ll do this for you, if you do that?
•
Joe said this a while ago, and I’m not sure where he heard it or if it’s an original:
“You have to learn to outserve each other.”
After 35 years of marriage, I know there’s something to that statement.
•
Consider. If he keeps leaving the dishes in the sink and it’s making you a little crazy? Go do the dishes, and don’t get butthurt. Somebody has to go first, why not you?
•
Especially when you’re both struggling. Life changes, people change, careers end, kids grow up, and there are seasons when neither one of you is quite sure what comes next. You can create new experiences together and try to be the steady person for each other while you figure it out.
•
Then pay attention. He’s told you you’re beautiful five times this week, tell him he’s a great dad. Catch your spouse doing something good and say it, catch your kids doing it too.
•
We get into all of that in this episode: marriage through transition, paying attention to each other again, creating new experiences, intimacy, and how you keep a long marriage alive as both of you change.
And, well... there’s the yum yum too. You’ll find that tip towards the end of the episode.
•
Episode 3: More Yum Yum Please has dropped on Spotify and YouTube.

A memory, a question, an old version of ourselves can bubble to the surface when we least expect it.

The tide will stir up what’s been resting beneath the surface. SOF spouses are a little like that too. Before you know it, the gem is right in front of us, willing to be talked about.

Those are the conversations we’re having at Soul Harbor.

Follow Soul Harbor Podcast. We’re just getting started.

✨It’s always the people.
Not just the views or temples or bowls of noodles (though those hit different too) but the ones showing up every day with heart and hustle.
The man selling pho before sunrise. The woman balancing a Thai food cart and a toddler. The street vendors making crafts with sacred flowers, the market mamas, the quiet legends who keep everything moving.
•
Bangkok. Vietnam. Cambodia.
Three countries, a million impressions and rich takeaways.
•
We dared to speed through the backstreets and sidewalks on scooters in the rain to view temples and the culture of Chinatown.
We weaved through Hanoi’s wild traffic on an e-bike with a guide who treated us like old friends while simultaneously trying to kill us.
•
We got sweaty, dusty, lost, full, amazed, and reminded again and again how much there is to learn when you leave your comfortable bubble.
•
The takeaway?
People are magic.
Kindness is a language.
Change is vital.
And every single day is a chance to see the world and each other a little more clearly.
