Outside foot pain? The cuboid may be one area worth checking šŸ‘€

The cuboid is a small bone on the outside of the midfoot. It sits between the heel and the fourth and fifth metatarsals, helps form the lateral column of the foot, and acts as a pulley for the peroneus longus tendon.

Because of its location, it plays an important role in foot stability, transferring force, and pushing off while walking or running. Restrictions or irritation around the cuboid can contribute to lateral foot pain and affect overall foot function.

I don’t have to perform this adjustment very often, but sometimes it’s exactly the area that needs attention. 🦶

One adjustment and she could already feel a difference in her finger šŸ‘€

The T4 region definitely seemed to be involved. When I asked if it felt more or less tingly, she described the change as relief.

But that’s still only one area. We still needed to check the lower neck, first rib, clavicle, elbows, wrists, and the muscles and trigger points along the entire pathway.

Burning in ALL 10 fingers? šŸ”„
Part 1

T4 syndrome typically presents as numbness or tingling in a glove-like pattern through the hands and forearms. It’s often bilateral, meaning symptoms are felt on both sides.

In her case, she described the sensation as more ā€œburningā€ than numbness. Burning, tingling, and numbness are all different forms of altered sensation, and the fact that she felt it through all 10 fingers gives us an important clue.

When symptoms affect every finger on both hands, they don’t follow the distribution of one individual nerve, like the median or ulnar nerve. That makes us think more centrally and look farther upstream.

As I worked through the upper thoracic spine, pressure around the T4 region reproduced the same familiar burning sensation into both hands. That makes T4 syndrome a strong consideration in her case.

But we still don’t stop there. We need to check the lower cervical spine, first rib, clavicle, elbow, wrist, and all the muscles and trigger points along the way to understand the full picture.

It’s not always the hand. šŸ‘€

When someone has pain, tingling, or numbness into the hand, there can be a lot to check.

The upper back, lower neck, shoulder, first rib, elbow, wrist, plus the muscles and trigger points throughout the arm can all potentially contribute.

We’ve helped a ton of people with referred arm pain and carpal-tunnel-like symptoms by taking this whole-chain approach instead of only chasing the spot where symptoms show up.

One adjustment isn’t always long term fix. But sometimes it’s just the thing to help your body get over the hurdle to healing.

I’m still surprised that people don’t know we can work on arms and legs.

We do that every day in our office. Even the jaw.

There are 206 bones in the body and only one bone in the front of your neck that doesn’t have a true joint attachment (the hyoid). Other than that, everything else is fair game šŸ˜‚

Feet, ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows and wrists are all areas we work on regularly.

Extremities (arms and legs) are actually really fun to work on. It can just take a little more time to figure out exactly what isn’t moving well and what needs to be worked on.

Sometimes that means adjusting a joint. Sometimes it means working on the muscles and other tissues around it. And sometimes what we find isn’t exactly where someone is feeling the problem.

Feet are a good example because they tend to need a lot of help. They get neglected, modern shoes aren’t always great for how our feet are designed to move, and by the time your feet actually start hurting, there can be things that haven’t been moving or functioning well for a while.

There are also 26 bones and 33 joints in each foot alone, so there’s a lot going on down there.

We’ve really specialized in extremities because we saw a need that wasn’t being fulfilled. I’ve also dealt with severe leg pain myself, so helping people with these kinds of issues has always been important to me.

Stick around if you want to see more of what we work on šŸ‘€
