None of these means something is wrong with you.

Using the rail is not wrong. Rails are there for safety. Watching your feet on uneven ground is smart.

This list is not a score.

One clue that is new for you matters more than five that have always been true.

So you noticed one or two. Now what?

That is what my free “Where do I start?” 5-minute check is for.

It takes about five minutes, and it helps you see what your balance may need first. You come away knowing where to start, instead of guessing.

Which one surprised you?

Comment STEADY and I’ll send you the free “Where do I start?” 5-minute check.

It is about how quickly your foot can get where it needs to go.

When you catch a toe on a rug or a curb, strength alone does not save you. A fast step does.

That is power, and it is one of the pieces of balance people rarely train.

The arm swing matters too. Your arms help you find your rhythm and counterbalance.

It is going to feel hard at first. That is okay. We can do hard things.

Their world got smaller and smaller.

That is how a patient described her parents’ retirement this week.

She is in her mid-60s and recently retired. Her parents retired, stayed home, and ended up doing less and less. She does not want the same for herself.

It is not just her story. I have been a geriatric physical therapist for over 15 years, and I have seen it many times. I have seen both sides of it in my own family too.

We tell people retirement is the time to slow down. I am not sure we are doing them a favor.

Here is what I told her:

Build your strength now.
Keep up your mobility.
Stay active.
Be social.
Keep doing the things you love.

And watch for the clues. Limiting yourself. Doing less. A social calendar that is not as full. A world that is getting smaller.

That is not a failure. It is useful information, and it is time to do something about it.

So enjoy the retirement. Keep doing the hard things.

What is one thing you want to keep in your world?

Capacity over age. Always.

I write about this every week. Comment NEWSLETTER and I’ll send you the link.

You are steady in your kitchen.

Then you walk into a dim restaurant, or a crowded store, and something feels different.

Nothing changed about your legs in those ten minutes. What changed is how much your eyes had to work with.

Balance is not one thing. Vision is one of the systems behind it, and some places ask a lot more of it than others.

Noticing where you feel different is a clue. And clues are something we can work with.

Comment STEADY and I’ll send you the free Balance Blind Spots Check.
