For 12 years, Billie Rae has been a beloved member of the TRI herd, helping countless children and adults build strength, confidence, and connection through equine-assisted services. As our longest-serving program horse, she has given more than a decade of her life to the participants who depend on her.
Last week, it was Billie Rae who needed us. We want to start by letting you know: she is doing great now!
When Billie Rae suddenly became seriously ill, our veterinarian quickly recognized she needed specialized care beyond what could be provided locally. Our team jumped into action, transporting her to The Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, where she was diagnosed with a serious abdominal infection.
Despite initial treatment with antibiotics, Billie Rae wasn't improving as hoped. Veterinarians determined that surgery was necessary to remove the infection and give her the best chance at recovery.
Thanks to the emergency funds TRI had set aside, we were able to say yes to the care Billie Rae needed. And we have wonderful news: Billie Rae is on the road to recovery! Following a successful surgery, she is feeling much better and is expected to return to doing what she loves during our spring session after several months of rest.
While we are incredibly grateful for this outcome, Billie Rae's emergency veterinary care came at an unexpected cost of over $12,000, significantly depleting the fund we rely on to protect our herd. This fund does more than cover emergencies, it also lets us welcome new program horses when needed, so every horse at TRI can maintain a healthy workload and get the care they deserve.
Our goal: raise $20,000 to replenish and strengthen TRI's Equine Emergency & Care Fund.
And today, your gift goes further. We're incredibly grateful to announce a $7,000 matching gift from an anonymous donor and the Delsorbo family, given in memory of Ana, who loved Billie Rae. That means until our bar hits $14,000, every gift is doubled, dollar for dollar.
Billie Rae has spent 12 years being there for others. When she needed us, we were ready. With your help, and in honor of Ana's love for this incredible horse, we'll be ready for the next horse who needs us too.
