Welcome to TAHCH

Please help us welcome Anne Stone as the new Executive Director of TAHC&H! Anne starts September 28.

Anne has spent more than 20 years leading professional and trade associations, most recently as Executive Director of the International Association of Arson Investigators.

She's joining us because she believes in the work our members do every day:

"Home care and hospice are about much more than health care—they are about helping people live with dignity, remain connected to their families and communities, and receive compassionate care where they call home… I am excited to listen, learn, and work alongside the Board, staff, and members."

Welcome to Texas home care and hospice, Anne!

Yesterday, I traded my CEO hat for my nursing hat and completed a patient recertification visit. As much as I love leading our agency, spending time in the field keeps me grounded and connected to the heart of what we do.

I was especially proud when my medication reconciliation showed every medication was accurate and accounted for. My patient had wonderful things to say about his nurses, and hearing him brag on them made me smile. They deserve every bit of the praise. Even better, his wound is healing beautifully, and if all continues to go well, his time with us will soon come to an end, and that’s the goal!

A few takeaways from the day:
• It is HOT out there!
• I completely understand why nurses aren’t excited about lab draw patients these days. Quest is so understaffed that the wait was long. The only upside? I got to cool off while waiting to hand off my specimen.
• People are driving like they’re in an action movie. I was nearly involved in two accidents.
• And finally… we need a raise so I can give my staff a raise!

Home health nursing takes a very special person. It requires skill, compassion, patience, and love. My patient, who is a paraplegic, and I shared laughs throughout our visit. When I walked out, I continued on with my day, but he remained in his bed with his caregiver. He told me he was glad our paths crossed. That moment was a reminder that while our visit may be just one part of our day, for our patients, those moments of care, conversation, and connection can mean so much more.

Call Beacon today if you or your family need care. 713-592/6428. You just might get to meet the CEO in person.

Morning Devotional

Set your heart to become one with Me, says the Lord. Allow Me to permeate every fiber of your being so that your thoughts mirror My will for you. There can be no separation, but only unity. Ephesians 4:4-6 There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Last week I was headed to Austin to join my colleagues at the capital for our Texas Association of homecare and Hospice lobby day. I received a call about an hour and a half into my drive that the state surveyors had showed up to my office. I turned around in Columbus, Texas, which just happens to be my hometown and headed back to my office. I arrived and the survey began. We were in survey three days from Tuesday to Thursday. I’m so happy to report that for the third time in a row for our three-year recertification survey Beacon Home Health Agency, received a clean bill with zero deficiencies. I’m so proud of my staff and the care our patients receive. God is good and we are blessed! 🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽

We hope this message finds you safe and well. We understand that recent severe weather has caused significant disruption, particularly with downed power lines and trees in your area. Your safety is our utmost priority, and we urge you to take the necessary precautions to protect yourself during this challenging time.

Here are some essential safety tips to help you navigate the aftermath of severe weather:

Stay indoors: If possible, remain indoors until authorities confirm it is safe to venture outside. Avoid going near downed power lines or damaged trees, as they may pose a serious risk.

Stay informed: Keep updated with the latest weather updates and emergency alerts through radio, TV, or reliable online sources. Authorities will provide instructions and guidance on how to stay safe during this time.

Use flashlights: In case of power outages, use flashlights instead of candles to illuminate your home. Candles pose a fire hazard, especially in situations where there may be gas leaks or flammable materials nearby.

Avoid flooded areas: Stay away from flooded streets or areas with standing water. Floodwaters can conceal hazards such as debris, sharp objects, or even electrical currents from downed power lines.

Check on neighbors: If it is safe to do so, check on elderly neighbors or those who may need assistance. Offer support and help them ensure their safety during this challenging time.

Have emergency supplies: Ensure you have a stock of essential supplies such as non-perishable food, water, medications, and first-aid supplies. Having these items readily available can help you weather the aftermath of severe weather more comfortably.

Contact emergency services if needed: If you encounter any emergencies or if you require assistance, do not hesitate to contact local emergency services. They are trained to handle these situations and will provide the necessary support.

Your safety is of paramount importance to us, and we urge you to prioritize it above all else. Please follow these safety guidelines diligently to protect yourself and your loved ones during this challenging time.

Take care and stay safe.

Warm regards,

Lora Mayes, BSN RN
