Arm immersion cooling has been in Army training since 2011, and the principle behind it is right: the useful place to intervene is the body, during the break. The tub is the part that did not age well.More

The Army cools hands and forearms between work bouts. The principle is right; the tub is the problem. Here is the research, and what it means for a crew.

Meet Richelle, Elliott, and Rixford, three siblings quietly stacking up hardware in Junior Olympic track and field. Between them: 12 All-American finishes.

They train in Houston, where the heat and humidity are relentless. When sweat can't evaporate, heart rate climbs, muscles get less oxygen, and the body can't shed heat between efforts. So the family cools where it counts, the palms, home to the body's most powerful heat-exchange vessels. Lower the core between reps, recover faster, and the next rep is a real rep instead of a survival effort.

Three athletes, three CoolMitts, one very cool family. We're proud to have them on the team.

Cool is the advantage. Heat is the enemy.

Workplace heat is already a measurable cost: 48 US workers died from heat in 2024, and heat-induced productivity loss runs near $100 billion a year. Injury risk rises 6 to 9 percent above 90°F and 10 to 15 percent above 100°F, so cooling the core is the lowest-cost variable to move.

Craig Gile and Rear Adm. (Ret.) Mike Wettlaufer are in Washington, DC this week representing CoolMitt at the Emerging Technologies for Defense Conference & Exhibition, hosted by NDIA and its Emerging Technologies Institute.

The event brings together leaders from government, the defense industry, and academia to look at the technologies that will shape national security, with a focus on systems that can be fielded within the next five years. Heat stress belongs on that list. CoolMitt was built to solve it.
