Many people proclaim autumn to be their favorite season. As the leaves change color and the temperature begins to drop, autumn brings a refreshing shift in our daily routines. Beyond cozy sweaters and seasonal treats, fall offers several unique health benefits that can boost both your physical and mental well-being.
First, cooler autumn nights naturally align with the body’s internal sleep signals. The early darkness naturally encourages the body to slow down. Cooler temps prompt your body to produce higher amounts of melatonin, the hormone responsible for sleep. Maintaining a cooler bedroom environment during this time of year can help you fall asleep faster and achieve deeper, more restorative rest. Additionally, the crisp fall weather creates ideal conditions for outdoor exercise, making activities like hiking, running, or brisk walking far more comfortable than during the summer heat.
The season also brings a variety of nutrient-rich seasonal foods to your diet. Particularly, in regions where there are drastic seasonal changes, the foods you consume are different for the season. As we move into cooler temps, I have a tendency to make more soup, richer foods, and comfort foods. Harvest produce such as pumpkins, apples, squash, and sweet potatoes are packed with essential fiber, immune-boosting Vitamin C, Vitamin A, and powerful antioxidants. Apples and pears are rich in soluble fiber, which actively helps lower LDL (bad cholesterol), regulates blood sugar, and nurtures healthy gut flora.
Finally, the changing season offers a valuable opportunity for a mental reset. Spending time outdoors admiring the vibrant autumn foliage can help reduce stress levels, lower blood pressure, and enhance overall mental clarity. Brisk walking, raking leaves, running, or something as simple as tossing a football or baseball provide excellent cardiovascular workouts without the risk of over heating.
Some things to be mindful of during this seasonal change that can sneak up on us: The drop of sunlight can disrupt your circadian rhythm. Getting up early in the morning to get exposure to morning sunlight helps to lock in your internal clock and keep energy levels high.
Another name for autumn is the pumpkin season. Be aware of the pumpkin spice sugar trap. While warming spices like cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger have powerful anti-inflammatory properties, seasonal treats like commercial lattes and pies are often loaded with processed sugars that can crash the immune system. Everything in moderation.
Wishing you a healthy, nutrient enriched autumn, in the flow.
