🕰️ The clocks fall back on November 1st, and for many people, so does their mood.

Shorter days and less sunlight can affect sleep, energy, and motivation. If you notice changes every fall, it’s not “just in your head.” Seasonal shifts in mental health are real and treatable.

If your current medication isn’t working the way it used to as the seasons change, that’s worth talking about. Small adjustments can make a big difference.

📅 Schedule a medication review with North Suffolk Psychiatry before the dark days settle in.

❌ MYTH: “Taking medication for my mental health means I’ve failed.”
✅ FACT: Using every tool available to feel better is a sign of strength.

❌ MYTH: “Once I start, I’ll be on it forever.”
✅ FACT: Treatment plans are personal. They’re reviewed, adjusted, and sometimes tapered, always with your provider.

❌ MYTH: “If the first medication didn’t work, nothing will.”
✅ FACT: Finding the right fit can take time. That’s exactly what medication management is for.

A note for anyone who needs it today 💌

Dear you,

You’ve been carrying a lot. Some days it feels heavy, and you keep showing up anyway. That counts. Asking for help doesn’t erase your strength. It protects it. You deserve to feel like yourself again.

Love,
North Suffolk Psychiatry

Your brain worked overtime today. Did anyone thank it? 🧠

It woke you up, got you through traffic, remembered that one email, worried about tomorrow, replayed something awkward from 2014, and still showed up for the people who count on you.

That’s a lot of unpaid labor. 😅

Mental health isn’t about being “fine” all the time. It’s about checking in with the part of you that never clocks out. Feeling tired, foggy, on edge, or just off lately? That’s not weakness. It’s information.

A few quick check-ins for this week:
✅ Are you sleeping, or just lying down with your phone?
✅ When did you last do something just because you enjoy it?
✅ Is there something you’ve been carrying that you haven’t said out loud?

If any of those hit a little close to home, you don’t have to figure it out alone. At North Suffolk Psychiatry, we’re here to listen, understand, and help you feel more like you again.

Today, on Indigenous Peoples' Day, we honor the history, resilience, and contributions of Indigenous peoples, past and present. 🪶

We recognize the strength of Indigenous communities and the rich cultures, traditions, and wisdom that continue to shape our nation. We also acknowledge that historical trauma and barriers to care have affected the mental health and well-being of many Indigenous families, and that everyone deserves access to compassionate, culturally respectful care.

Take a moment today to learn about the Indigenous peoples of your region, support Indigenous-owned businesses and organizations, and listen to Indigenous voices and stories.

At North Suffolk Psychiatry, we are committed to supporting the mental health of every person in our community. If you or someone you love is looking for care, call us at 757-758-6001.

We often give so much of our energy to work, family, and everyone else's needs that we forget to extend the same compassion to ourselves. Healing is not linear, and progress looks different for everyone. Some days it means big steps forward, and other days it simply means getting through.

A few gentle reminders:
✨ You are doing better than you think.
✨ Rest is productive, not lazy.
✨ Asking for help is a sign of strength.
✨ You would never talk to a friend the way you sometimes talk to yourself.

Take a moment today to breathe, slow down, and treat yourself with the same kindness you offer others.

At North Suffolk Psychiatry, we are here to support your mental health journey every step of the way. If you or someone you love is looking for care, call us at 757-758-6001.

Postpartum depression is common, and it's treatable.

Welcoming a baby is supposed to be joyful. But for many parents, the weeks and months after birth bring something else too: sadness, anxiety, exhaustion, and the guilt of not feeling the way they think they should.

Postpartum depression can affect mothers, fathers, and partners, and it is not a sign of weakness or of being a bad parent. Some mood changes in the first couple of weeks are common, but symptoms that last longer or feel heavier deserve attention.

Signs to watch for:

🧡 Feeling sad, empty, or hopeless most of the day
🧡 Constant worry, panic, or feeling on edge
🧡 Trouble bonding with your baby
🧡 Crying often, or feeling numb
🧡 Sleep trouble even when the baby is sleeping
🧡 Feeling overwhelmed, irritable, or like you can't cope

A few small things that can help:

✨ Tell someone how you're really feeling
✨ Accept help with meals, chores, and nighttime feeds
✨ Rest when you can, even in short stretches
✨ Get outside for a few minutes of fresh air
✨ Don't wait for it to pass on its own

You don't have to figure it out alone. Our medication management providers can talk with you about whether medication may be a helpful part of your care, including options if you are breastfeeding. Many parents also find it helpful to pair treatment with a therapist or a new parent support group.

If you ever have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby, please seek help right away. Call or text 988, or call the National Maternal Mental Health Hotline at 1-833-852-6262, available 24/7.

At North Suffolk Psychiatry, we're here to listen without judgment. 📞 Call us or message us to schedule an appointment.

Parent burnout is real, and you're not failing.

You love your kids. You'd do anything for them. And some days you're running on empty anyway.

Parenting is rewarding, but the constant demands can wear you down. When stress builds up with no relief, it can turn into burnout, and burnout can overlap with anxiety and depression.

Signs to watch for:

💛 Exhaustion that sleep doesn't fix
💛 Constant worry, racing thoughts, or feeling on edge
💛 Feeling sad, hopeless, or numb
💛 Losing patience more quickly than you used to
💛 Pulling away from your kids, friends, or things you once enjoyed

If this sounds familiar, please hear this: needing support doesn't make you a bad parent. It makes you a human one.

A few small things that can help:
✨ Ask for help, and accept it when it's offered
✨ Protect even 10 minutes a day that's just for you
✨ Let "good enough" be enough
✨ Talk to someone who understands

Support looks different for everyone. For some parents, therapy and a listening ear make the difference. For others, medication management may be a helpful part of the plan. Whatever fits you, we'll help you find it.

At NSP, our team is here to listen and help you find your footing again. 📞 Call us or message us to schedule an appointment.
