I didn't think I had to still educate on sea moss 🤯

A customer came in looking for sea moss, but when I showed him Chondrus crispus, he didn’t recognize it. He was accustomed to seeing Gracilaria.

Before there were pharmacies, there were plants. Before there were textbooks, there were people who knew how to listen to them. 🌿

Across generations, African people developed deep relationships with the plants around them, not only as sources of medicine, but as food, ritual, protection, and connection to the natural world.

That knowledge didn’t disappear when our ancestors crossed the Atlantic. It traveled with them, adapted, and continued throughout the African diaspora including here in the Carolinas and within Gullah Geechee traditions.

This relationship between plants, people, spirit, and healing is at the heart of my book, Sacred Rootz: African and Gullah Traditions of Plants, Spirit, and Healing.

I’m excited to be part of the Health & Financial Wellness Seminar alongside Bernard Alcindor, bringing together two conversations our community needs more of: taking control of our health and taking control of our financial future.

I’ll be sharing practical knowledge around herbal medicine, holistic wellness, nutrition, and how we can become more intentional about caring for our bodies. Bernard will be bringing the financial side—helping us think about money, legacy, and building something that lasts beyond us.
And we’re doing it over some good, authentic African food! 🌿🍲💰
