In 1882, London physician Sydney Ringer was keeping a frog's heart beating in a salt solution. When he remade the solution with pure distilled water, the heart quit within minutes. The reason? His lab assistant had been mixing the original batches with London tap water, full of minerals like calcium. Those minerals were what kept the heart beating.

⛈️ Did you know that fresh smell after a thunderstorm is ozone?

In 1840, a German-Swiss chemist named Christian Schönbein noticed a sharp, clean smell coming from his lab equipment, the same scent people noticed in the air after lightning. He named it ozone, from the Greek word ozein: "to smell."

Lightning makes it by splitting ordinary oxygen apart. Some of those loose atoms join up in threes instead of twos, and that one extra atom turns the air you breathe into something highly reactive. Since then, ozone has been used to clean city drinking water (starting in Nice, France in 1906), to clean wounds in World War I before antibiotics existed, and today in blood ozone therapy, widely practiced in Europe and growing in the U.S.
