Teacher of the Month: Sofia🌟
My yoga journey began in my early twenties as a way to improve my physical health. What I discovered was so much more—a philosophy that offered deep self-exploration, a stronger connection to my essence, and a path to balance on multiple levels. What started as a workout quickly became a way of life, a powerful tool for mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Yoga has been my anchor through life’s challenges, a guide in my personal growth, and a source of strength and curiosity. It has helped me connect with my inner wisdom, challenge myself, and stay grounded during difficult times. Most profoundly, it prepared me for two of the most transformative experiences of my life—childbirth with my two beautiful children.

After years of practice, study, and personal exploration, I decided to take the next step in 2023 by completing my Yoga Teacher Training. My goal is to share this incredible practice with others, helping them find their own path to balance, resilience, and self-discovery.

This realization came through my journey with lupus, kidney failure, and a spiritual awakening. I discovered that dis-ease is not from one singular cause, but a complex web of genetics, epigenomics, and psycho-somatic behaviors:

Genetics form the health foundation.
Epigenomics reflects how external influences shape gene expression.
Psycho-somatic behaviors are formed by how we internalize experiences.

Have always wanted the strength and flexibility to go straight into a press headstand at any moment and make it look effortless. Realized CrossFit style training wasn’t going to get me there. Eventually found a YouTube couple named Bre and Flo (bnf.yoga), they opened the door to all that is yoga. Five years later I’m here, continuously practicing and full of gratitude for this studio. Lupus changed my life. Kidney failure, dialysis, and a failed transplant pushed me to the edge. There were days of fear, uncertainty, and exhaustion—moments where I questioned whether I could keep going. But every step of the journey taught me something profound: healing is possible, even in the darkest times.

From Manager to Mentor: Embracing the “Let Them” Theory

Transitioning from managing every detail of my boys’ lives to embracing the “Let Them” theory has been both humbling and enlightening. Allowing them to make their own choices—even when they clash with mine—has revealed their growth into capable, confident young men.

✨ Fashion Choices
Gone are the days of picking their outfits. Now, their unique (and sometimes puzzling) style choices remind me to value their individuality.

✨ The Long Hair Saga
Their commitment to growing out and maintaining their hair taught me to let go of superficial judgments and appreciate their self-expression.

✨ Messy Rooms
A messy room isn’t the end of the world. It’s a sign of independence and a lesson in accountability.

✨ Laundry & Dishes
Resisting the urge to manage their chores was tough, but the pride they show after completing tasks makes it worthwhile.

✨ Dietary Choices
As a dietitian, watching TikTok trends win over my advice was frustrating. But trusting them to learn from their choices has been a valuable exercise in letting go.

Letting my boys make their own decisions and face the consequences has been challenging but rewarding. It’s a daily practice in patience and trust, but seeing their confidence grow makes it all worthwhile.

Self-care is often portrayed as indulgent spa days or cozy nights with a favorite book. While those moments are valuable, true self-care goes much deeper. It’s not just about escaping stress but intentionally designing a life that supports your physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Here’s a fresh perspective:

1. Self-Care as Maintenance, Not Reward
Think of self-care as daily maintenance rather than something you earn after burnout. It’s the small, consistent habits—like setting boundaries, nourishing your body, or taking mindful breaks—that keep you running smoothly.

2. Self-Care as Connection
It’s not just about solitude. Self-care includes nurturing connections with others who uplift and inspire you. Community and relationships play a crucial role in emotional health.

3. Self-Care as Growth
Sometimes, self-care is about doing the hard things—having difficult conversations, sticking to your goals, or pushing through discomfort to grow. It’s about aligning your actions with your values and aspirations.

4. Self-Care as Energy Management

Reverse Lupus

Lupus is a complex All Systems Dis-Ease that can manifest differently for each one of us. Living with Lupus is very different from understanding the “disease” in “theory”. I believe that’s where the GAP is with Medical Doctors and us Lupus patients.

Living with Lupus is like living with an angry WOLF within that threatens every facet of our lives. Mainstream treatment with various toxic meds are the inevitable solution for those times when the WOLF is strong within.

Conventional Medicine keeps the WOLF and US under THEIR control, but there is a better way. When the WOLF is weak, we can RESTORE our HEALTH to get strong and FIGHT. This very FACT is not emphasized in Medicine.

After living with Lupus and threatend by the WOLF for over 19 years, Dr. Connie has learned the ART and the SCIENCE of living strategically with Lupus to enable her to not only regain her health back from it, but to BEAT it.
